Lockdown Designer

A fresh new Windows 10 app from Microsoft has been spotted in the Windows Store for PCs. From the app store description, it seems the app is particularly aimed at enterprises who need to manage Windows 10 Mobile devices for its users.

Coming to the working, the Lockdown Designer allows you to configure and create a lockdown XML file that you can apply to devices running Windows 10 Mobile, version 1703 (Creators Update).

A lockdown XML file determines which apps and settings are available on the mobile device.

The app also supports remote simulation helping you to create a custom layout for the Start screen. If there are multiple users using the same Windows 10 Mobile device, you can take help of the app by defining multiple roles for device users, and configure the apps and settings for each role separately. Once a role is created, any user under the role will only be able to access those apps or make any change via Settings.

On deploying the lockdown XML file to a device, it is saved on the device as wehlockdown.xml. Once device boots up, it looks for wehlockdown.xml and applies any settings configured in the file.

The Lockdown Designer is available on PC running Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607) or later. Once installed, you can connect a mobile device running Windows 10 Mobile, version 1703, to the PC.
