In a recent article, we covered some of the major new features in Microsoft Edge on Creators Update for Windows 10 PCs. From the new tab management feature, to a speedier browsing in a safer browsing environment, Microsoft Edge has dozens of new features and under-the-hood improvements to make the best browser on Windows 10 faster, leaner, and more capable than ever.
In November last year, a battery life test was conducted for Microsoft Edge, where it was put against the rival and most used PC browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, to find out which browser is the most battery efficient on your device. Although, this doesn’t apply to a desktop PC but was mostly targeted at mobile devices like Laptops, tablets etc. The result, Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 (Anniversary Update) was found to be up to 24%-43% more efficient than the competition for general purpose browsing, and lasting up to 23%-69% longer when streaming video.
Now that the Creators Update is out for public, Microsoft has yet again conducted the tests against the latest stable versions of competitive browsers. The test was done on three Surface Books running build 15063 and connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi. As measured by the open-source efficiency test that simulates real-world browsing, Microsoft Edge on the Creators Update uses 31% less power than Google Chrome 57, and 44% less power than Mozilla Firefox 52, according to Microsoft.
This has been possible since Microsoft Edge now blocks Flash content by default and encourages HTML5 content. Also, the efficiency of iframes, and optimizing hit testing may be some of the major new deciding factors.
As can be seen in the image above, Microsoft Edge outlasts Google Chrome by more than three hours, which is certainly a major leap from last year result and definitely to watch out for when using Windows 10 on your PC.
