Microsoft has urged Indian government to allow it to pilot the White-Fi tech in India. The White-Fi tech enables use of Television’s white space to provide Wi-Fi at a very big scale. This may be very helpful in bringing internet connectivity to remote villages in India. CEO Satya Nadella met telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and made this request.

Satya Nadella, global CEO of Microsoft, urged telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to allow the US software major to pilot its ‘White-Fi’ technology to provide internet connectivity in remote villages in the country at a meeting in the capital on Friday.

Microsoft’s White-Fi, or television White-Space technology, works like Wi-Fi on a bigger scale to provide wireless connectivity across a 10km radius at a speed of up to 16mbps, by using chunks of airwaves lying between spectrum kept untouched by broadcasters to avoid interference or disturbance between transmissions.

Nadella is currently on a visit to India and has already met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Microsoft has offered to partner government in its “Digital India” initiative.
