Skype is no longer supported on Windows Phone 8.1

Microsoft has just killed Skype app support for devices running Windows Phone 8.1 or below operating system. This means any Windows Phone 8/8.1 device with Skype app may experience problems with calls and chats, lost or dropped calls and instant messages, or could stop working altogether.

Skype is always making improvements, such as enhanced quality, better reliability, and improved security. Because we want everyone to experience the best Skype has to offer, it’s sometimes necessary to retire older versions of Skype, and Skype enabled devices.

Given the sensitivity of the matter, this is an unwelcomed move for a die-hard Windows Phone fan. If you still have a Windows Phone 8.1 device lying around in the corner, seeing Microsoft retiring its own apps on its own platform is indeed very distasteful.

However, if you upgraded your device to Windows 10/Mobile, no action is needed and Microsoft will continue to support the platform for the rest of its lifecycle.
