Universal Windows Platform(UWP) was Microsoft’s effort to close the app gap on its phone ecosystem. While the original purpose for the UWP is dead already, Microsoft is still trying hard to turn the UWP into a success. However, the UWP as it is today is quite capable and can for a casual user it might fit the needs. For example, there is a hidden UWP File Explorer in the Windows 10 desktop.

Needless to say, the UWP version of the File Explorer is not as capable as the default File Explorer in Windows 10 and has limited functionalities. Which in turn means it certainly cannot replace your default File Explorer. Nevertheless, for accessing files, it is actually a great alternative to the default explorer.

There is a simple hack to enable the UWP version of the File Explorer. Mind you that the experience might not be as satisfying as on mobile so you should always keep your expectation low. Enable the UWP File Explorer just to play with it.

How to Enable UWP File Explorer

  1. Right-click on Windows 10 desktop. Now, select New > Shortcut.
  2. You will be asked to enter the destination address.
  3. In the destination address, type the following and click Next: explorer shell:AppsFolder\c5e2524a-ea46-4f67-841f-6a9465d9d515_cw5n1h2txyewy!App
  4. Now give it a name of your choice. I would prefer UWP File Explorer as it makes sense but you can choose anything
  5. After you’re done with the above steps, the UWP File Explorer icon should appear on the Desktop along with the shortcut name. Just double click on the icon to launch the UWP File Explorer.
