According to a report from Futuresource, the global education market is still dominated by the PC OEMs despite the continuous growth of the Chromebook.

Overall the demand for a low-budget computer is on the rise. Talking about the exact number, computers that come under the sub $300 category is selling like hotcakes. Global sales of the Windows 10 grew by 11 percent year-on-year in Q2 2018. While the Windows 10 is preferred over Chromebook globally, the competition is tough in the USA market with 89 percent of Chromebook global sales remain in this country only.

Microsoft, especially, has been working hard to close the price gap between Windows and Chromebook by promoting partner devices on the Windows platform, priced as low as $189. Globally, Windows share in sub $300 category grew by 11% year-on-year in Q2 2018, with shipments of Windows devices in the category growing 75%.

Overall if we compare the sales of 2017 and 2018, both Chrome and Windows made a significant improvement with a 0.4 and 0.7 percent increase in share respectively.

We have earlier seen hardware giant Apple tinkering with the idea of a $299 iPad for education to catch up with arch rivals like Google and Microsoft which itself speak for the importance of a low-budget device aimed at education.
