Windows 10 update KB5003637 causes Taskbar/System tray & printer issues, fails to install for many

0

Microsoft recently released monthly update KB5003637 to Windows 10 versions 21H1, 20H2 and 2004. The update brings improvements for file manager and many other windows components.

But the update is causing Taskbar/system tray for many users. It is also failing to install for some users with error code 0x80070003. Many users also complained about facing printer spool issue after installing the update. All three issues may be widespread as is clear from many threads at Reddit and official Microsoft forum by users.

Taskbar issue:

Many users have reported facing Taskbar/system tray issues after installing the update KB5003637. This is what one of the users has reported. Read similar user complaints by clicking here, here and here. Users also report that disabling the News & Interests feed caused issues for them.

System tray / notification area disappeared post-update; can be restored; disappears again if Outlook is opened.

Hi,

Windows updated last night. The News & Interests icon appeared; the entire system tray disappeared including time and date.

If I turn off “lock the taskbar” I can raise the taskbar

Which shows they are there…. lowering the taskbar again brings the system tray to the top,

and a rollover with the mouse ‘cleans it’.

So it’s back. Hooray! But not for long because (and this is the freaky bit) when I open Outlook or Skype (and so far it’s only Outlook & Skype) the system tray disappears again.

So. How can I get the system tray to stay where it’s supposed to be; & / or how can I roll back last night’s upgrade?

Many thanks,

Evan

Printer issues:

Users have reported that the update is causing issue with printer spooler. Going through the thread comments reveal that this issue is troubling many users.

I manage a couple dozen computers at a small business, all of them identical models, all running Win10 Pro (a mix of 20H2 and 21H1). They all connect to and share the same network printers.

Last night, as usual, Windows did its thing and proceeded to install the June updates on these systems, including KB5003637. Since then, multiple computers have been having issues with the Print Spooler randomly and repeatedly stopping/failing. Manually restarting the service works, but it’ll stop again within a few minutes. Restarting the computer doesn’t help, the same thing continues to happen.

I suspect KB5003637 may be the cause, because one of the fixes in it deals with the Print Spooler (CVE-2021-1675 Windows Print Spooler Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability). I am going to experimentally try uninstalling it to see if it fixes the problem, but in the meantime I am wondering if anyone else has been having trouble with the Print Spooler service on their systems since installing the June updates.

Thank you.

UPDATE: It seems that I was correct, KB5003637 is the cause, at least in my case. No reliable long-term fix has yet been made available (nor any mention of the problem from Microsoft), so in the meantime I’ve begun the tedious process of uninstalling the update on every affected machine, and pausing updates for a month with the hope that a fixed version of the update will be released during that time.

Fails to install:

Two users have reported 1 2 that the update KB5003637 fails to install with error code 0x80070003.
