Windows 10 – Windows Update fails – KB4579311 – 0x80073701
Hello,

Windows Update fails as per above.

Also cannot add Windows features: same error

Have tried sfc and DISM; no errors reported.

KB4579311 keeps trying to install and fails everytime
I think I stepped on someone else’s post, so I am re-posting this. (I originally replied to the post on 10/16/2020, so the date sequence might be a little out of context.)

“2020-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4579311)Failed to install on ‎10/‎15/‎2020 – 0x800f0988”. It hung at 0%, 11%, 13%, 14%, 15%, 16%, 17%, 18%, 19%, 20%, jumped to 73%, then stated an error message and wanted me to try again. It was late evening 10/15/2020, so I shut down. I booted up this morning and it looks like the same sequence is occurring.

One user reported about facing mouse related issues after installing the update.

Windows update issues (kB4579311)(KB4578968)
I have to reinstall windows multiple times until I was able to narrow it down to one of these windows updates (kB4579311) (KB4578968).  Once I installed these updates my mouse will no longer highlight words or able to click on drop down menus.  Sometimes it will not let me click on anything.  Is there a solution for this?

One of the users also reported a camera app causing BSOD after installing the update.

Hi

RE: Password not accepted after KB4579311 update

Windows Update KB4579311 causing explorer to crash repeatedly when logging in.
Hi, I’ve been having an issue with Windows Update KB4579311. When it gets installed it causes the Explorer to crash repeatedly until it eventually logs me in, at which point I can use it as normal. BUT, the crashing increases time it takes to log in and load everything up. It’s very annoying.

Even the Windows 10 version 1909 update KB4577671 failed to install  for many users.

Windows 10 October Cumulative Update Fails
KB4577671 was automatically downloaded and attempted to be installed without me realizing it.  After this was done, I was prompted to reboot Windows 10 Professional.  Upon rebooting, my workstation gets stuck in a non-stop reboot loop.  This update is the cause of it.  This happened early in the morning, and I had enough time to restore my last full backup that was less than one month old.

Windows 10 Security Update Fail
The recent security update which is KB4577671 always fails to install both manual install and windows setting update install. I also tried some other things like redownloading the file, disabling non Microsoft services(including the antivirus program), and installing it from another user which has less programs installed, still wont work for my PC. Any other solutions?

Some even reported update failures with certain error codes like 0x800f0986 and 0x800f0831.

The October update repeatedly fails with error 0x800f0986. I’ve already tried 15 times.

The same error occurs with both Windows Update and manually downloaded update KB4577671 (windows10.0-kb4577671-x64_2c354d18b910d565f23b7ede1ec971852f68d0df.msu found here https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4577671).

Dear,

I’m on Windows 10 1903. Every few days the systems attempts to update itself but finally reverts. KB4577671 error 0x800f0831. This drives me crazy.

I tried to get help from Microsoft support. During the last session they even deliberate managed to shut down my the computer while they where on remote assistance. End of shift? So far for my confidence I Microsoft support.
