Microsoft is accelerating its efforts to modernize legacy elements of the Windows shell. In a progress report on Windows quality commitments, Pavan Davuluri, Corporate Vice President of Windows and Devices, officially confirmed that the classic AutoPlay dialog and File/Folder Properties dialogs will soon receive modern WinUI 3 updates in upcoming Windows Insider Preview Experimental builds.
Modernizing Legacy Windows Shell Elements
While Windows 11 introduced a fluent, modern design language across major areas like Settings, File Explorer, and the Taskbar, several core dialog boxes remain untouched from the Windows 7 and Windows Vista eras.
Microsoft’s ongoing shell modernization effort focuses on moving these legacy interfaces to WinUI 3—the modern native user interface framework for Windows apps.
