According to early feature breakdowns and Xcode developer documentation, Apple is building a brand-new feature called iPhone Handoff. Building on the ecosystem convenience that already lets you hand off FaceTime calls, Safari tabs, and copy-pasted text between Apple devices, this new feature brings that same seamless magic directly to your phone number.
How iPhone Handoff Actually Works
Under the hood, iPhone Handoff relies on a Main iPhone and a Companion iPhone setup. Your primary device holds the main eSIM account, while your secondary device links via a specialized, carrier-provisioned companion eSIM.
Instead of keeping both cellular radios fully active simultaneously—something network providers rarely allow—iOS 27 uses a clever active/passive switching mechanism:
Quick Pairing: In Settings > Cellular, holding the two iPhones near each other links them securely under one account profile.
Unlock to Switch: The moment you pick up and unlock your companion iPhone, your phone number, incoming voice calls, SMS messages, and mobile data dynamically route to that phone. Lock it and unlock your main iPhone, and everything instantly switches back.
Dynamic Island Confirmation: Whenever the network switch triggers, a slick notification expands in the Dynamic Island confirming that cellular service has successfully transferred to the device in your hand.
Unified Location Tracking: Find My and emergency location services automatically mirror the active device, so your real-time location always originates from the phone you’re actually holding.
