OpenAI and Anthropic have announced significant improvements to their flagship AI coding platforms, giving paid subscribers more access and better efficiency. OpenAI is temporarily removing usage restrictions for ChatGPT Work while optimizing GPT-5.6 Sol, and Anthropic is extending Claude Fable 5 availability alongside higher Claude Code limits.
These updates arrive as competition in AI coding assistants intensifies, with both companies focusing on improving the experience for developers, researchers, and enterprise users.
OpenAI removes ChatGPT Work usage limits
After what OpenAI described as an “intense” 48 hours following the launch of ChatGPT Work and Codex, the company announced three major updates:
- Temporary removal of the 5-hour usage limit for ChatGPT Plus, Business, and Pro subscribers.
- GPT-5.6 Sol is becoming more efficient, allowing users to complete more work while consuming fewer usage credits. OpenAI says it will share exact efficiency gains after monitoring the rollout.
- A usage reset is rolling out, giving eligible users fresh capacity almost immediately.
These changes should make ChatGPT Work considerably more useful for users running long coding sessions, AI agents, research workflows, and enterprise automation.
ChatGPT Work reaches 6 million active users
OpenAI also revealed that ChatGPT Work has surpassed 6 million active users, highlighting the rapid adoption of its AI productivity platform.
The milestone comes just days after the wider rollout of ChatGPT Work and the integrated Codex experience, suggesting strong demand from businesses and developers.
Anthropic extends Claude Fable 5 access
Anthropic has also announced good news for Claude users.
The company is extending Claude Fable 5 access across all paid plans, allowing subscribers to continue using its latest flagship model beyond the original availability window.
In addition, Anthropic confirmed that Claude Code’s weekly rate limits will remain 50% higher through July 19, giving developers extra capacity for coding, debugging, and AI-assisted software development.
The extension means users will continue benefiting from expanded usage while Anthropic scales infrastructure to meet growing demand.
AI coding competition is heating up
The latest announcements show both OpenAI and Anthropic are rapidly increasing access to their most capable AI models.
OpenAI is focusing on:
- Removing temporary usage restrictions
- Improving GPT-5.6 Sol efficiency
- Refreshing user quotas
- Scaling ChatGPT Work after reaching 6 million active users
Meanwhile, Anthropic is:
- Extending Claude Fable 5 access for all paid subscribers
- Keeping Claude Code’s weekly limits 50% higher through July 19
For developers and power users, these updates mean more uninterrupted AI-assisted coding, longer workflows, and fewer concerns about hitting usage limits.
