OpenAI may be getting very close to releasing its next major AI model.

The model, widely known by the codename Astra, has reportedly appeared in the OpenAI API under the name “gpt-6-astra.” An unusual response from the Responses API has sparked speculation that OpenAI has already staged the model internally and could be preparing to make it available.

And if the timing theory is correct, GPT-6 Astra could potentially launch as soon as today.

There is an important caveat, though: OpenAI has not confirmed that Astra will be called GPT-6, and the API behavior being discussed by AI watchers is not official confirmation of a public release.

GPT-6 Astra reportedly appears in OpenAI’s API

The latest clue comes from testing the OpenAI Responses API with the model identifier gpt-6-astra.

According to an API probe shared online, the request returns a 404 Not Found response rather than the 400 response reportedly returned for random or invalid model names. The same 404 behavior has reportedly been observed with another known internal model identifier, adding to speculation that the Astra name has been registered somewhere in OpenAI’s backend.

That doesn’t prove that Astra is ready to launch.

A 404 response can have several technical explanations, including routing, permissions, deployment configuration or a model that exists internally but isn’t available to the requesting account.

Still, the distinction is enough to get the AI community watching closely.

Why a launch today is being discussed

The timing is what makes this particular leak interesting.

OpenAI published an official update about Astra on September 1, saying it had completed additional evaluations and believed Astra’s safeguards were sufficient for release under its Preparedness Framework. OpenAI also said it plans to make Astra available soon, although its most advanced cybersecurity capabilities will initially have more restricted access.

That means Astra isn’t simply an old rumor anymore.

OpenAI has publicly acknowledged the model, discussed its capabilities and safety work, and confirmed that a release is coming.

The remaining question is when.

The API clue has therefore led some observers to speculate that the launch window could be extremely close.

The Fable 5.1 comparison is interesting

One reason the current theory is getting attention is the comparison with Anthropic’s Fable 5.1.

The Astra rumor suggests a similar backend signal appeared shortly before Fable 5.1 became public.

That doesn’t mean OpenAI is following the exact same release process. But if an internal model identifier appears shortly before a public launch, it can be an interesting clue that deployment preparations are underway.

It is still only a clue—not a countdown clock.

Astra could be a major upgrade for coding

Beyond the release timing, the most interesting rumors surrounding Astra involve its coding performance.

Unofficial reports claim that Astra is particularly strong at web development, potentially outperforming Fable 5.1 in several areas.

That would be significant because frontend development has historically exposed some weaknesses in large language models.

Generating a technically correct backend implementation is one thing. Building a polished frontend that looks good, behaves correctly and survives multiple rounds of changes is much harder.

Astra is reportedly being positioned as a substantial improvement in this area.

If those early reports hold up, developers could see better results when asking Astra to build complete websites, dashboards and web applications rather than simply generating isolated pieces of code.

Frontend development could be Astra’s big advantage

AI coding models have become remarkably capable at writing code.

But asking an AI to build an entire web application involves much more than producing syntactically correct code.

Another claim circulating around Astra is that it could achieve stronger results while using fewer output tokens than Fable 5.1.

Token efficiency has become increasingly important as AI models move toward long-running agentic workflows.

That doesn’t prove the rumored comparison with Fable 5.1, but it does show that token efficiency is an area where Astra has made substantial progress.

OpenAI says Astra is unusually capable

The biggest reason Astra deserves attention isn’t actually the API leak.

It’s what OpenAI itself has said about the model.

OpenAI says Astra has reached its Critical cybersecurity capability threshold. In testing, the company says Astra was able to identify previously unknown vulnerabilities and develop exploit chains in hardened environments.

OpenAI also reported that Astra achieved a perfect score on its ExploitBench evaluation and discovered two zero-day vulnerabilities during an internal evaluation.

Those capabilities explain why OpenAI has been unusually cautious about releasing the model.

The company says Astra’s advanced cybersecurity capabilities will initially be restricted to a smaller group of testers, with access later expanding through its Daybreak Blue program.

So, is GPT-6 Astra launching today?

Possibly—but there is no confirmation yet.

The evidence currently consists of three pieces:

  1. OpenAI has officially acknowledged Astra.
  2. OpenAI says it plans to make Astra available soon.
  3. An API probe reportedly produces unusual behavior for gpt-6-astra.

Put together, that’s enough to make an imminent release plausible.

But it isn’t enough to say that GPT-6 Astra will launch today.

The model could appear later this week, next week, or under a completely different public name.

There’s also an important naming question.

OpenAI has not officially said that Astra will be marketed as GPT-6. The gpt-6-astra identifier being discussed online may simply be an internal or temporary model name.

Regardless of whether the launch happens today, Astra looks increasingly important.

For now, the best approach is to treat the GPT-6 Astra launch-today claim as a strong rumor, not a confirmed release date.

But with OpenAI saying Astra is coming soon and unusual API behavior reportedly appearing around the suspected model identifier, the wait may be getting very short.
