Microsoft is rolling out new customization options for the floating Copilot button in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint after many users complained that the feature blocked important content while working on documents and spreadsheets.

The company is now giving users more control over where the Copilot Dynamic Action Button appears and how it behaves across Microsoft 365 apps.

Microsoft Adds More Control to the Floating Copilot Button

The Copilot Dynamic Action Button was introduced to make AI tools easier to access directly inside documents. However, many users criticized the floating button because it sometimes covered text, cells, charts, and editing tools during active work sessions.

To address the feedback, Microsoft is introducing two major improvements.

Users Can Move the Copilot Button to the Ribbon

Users will soon be able to right-click the floating Copilot button and select “Move to ribbon.”

This change places the Copilot shortcut into the ribbon interface or the Quick Access Toolbar at the top of the application window. The option removes the floating overlay entirely, creating a cleaner workspace for users who prefer a traditional layout.

The update is especially useful for Excel users working with large spreadsheets and PowerPoint creators editing slides where screen space is important.

Docking Improvements Also Arrive

Microsoft is also improving the existing Dock feature.

Previously, pinning the Copilot button to the side of the app window was only temporary. After certain actions or document changes, the button could return to its original floating position.

With the upcoming update, the docked position will now remain fixed throughout the entire document session. This creates a more predictable and less distracting experience across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Why Microsoft Is Making These Changes

The updates come after growing backlash from Microsoft 365 users who felt the floating AI button interrupted productivity instead of improving it.

Many users reported that the button occasionally covered important formatting tools, spreadsheet cells, or document content while editing. The criticism reflects a broader challenge facing software companies as they integrate AI features more aggressively into existing productivity apps.

Microsoft appears to be responding quickly by prioritizing customization and user choice rather than forcing a single interface design.

Rollout Details

Microsoft says the new Copilot button controls will roll out soon for:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint

The changes will be available across:

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Web versions of Microsoft 365 apps

The company has not yet shared an exact rollout timeline, but availability is expected in upcoming Microsoft 365 updates.

Microsoft Continues Refining Copilot Experience

Microsoft has been rapidly expanding Copilot integration across its ecosystem, including Windows 11, Edge, Teams, and Microsoft 365 apps. The latest changes show the company is listening closely to user feedback as AI features become more deeply embedded into daily workflows.

Giving users the ability to reposition or dock AI controls could help reduce frustration while still keeping Copilot accessible for those who use it frequently.
