When Microsoft launched Surface Duo after much fanfare there was wide criticism about the choice of processor for the device. Now, it seems Microsoft is eyeing big performance jump in Surface Duo 2 with Snapdragon 888 processor.
Surface Duo 2 has just appeared in Geekbench database. The listing reveals that the processor that will power Surface Duo 2 is “ARM implementer 65 architecture 8 variant 1 part 3396 revision 0”. On further digging it becomes clear that its is Snapdragon 888 processor that powers most of Android flagships worldwide.
The listing further reveals 8GB RAM and Android 11 OS version. Snapdragon 888 is a big jump over the Snapdragon 855 used in the original Surface Duo. Not only it brings a big performance gain it is only fitting that Microsoft is adding 5G support in Surface Duo 2. Lack of 5G support was another sore point with many Microsoft fans and prospective Surface Duo buyers.
These listing may also hint at Microsoft planning to launch Surface Duo 2 soon. We can expect a Surface hardware event in Q3 2021 where Surface Duo 2 may be launched with newer Surfaces belonging to Laptops and 2-in-1 categories.
