Microsoft is reportedly working on a major new AI-powered search experience for Windows 11 that could completely change how users interact with the taskbar. The new feature, called “Ask Copilot,” is expected to bring conversational AI directly into Windows Search, making it easier to find files, documents, settings, and apps using natural language.
Instead of relying on exact file names or keywords, users may soon be able to type requests such as:
- “Find the notes I edited last night”
- “Open the PDF John sent me”
- “Show my recent screenshots”
- “Find the presentation I worked on this week”
The new Copilot-powered search would reportedly understand context, recent activity, and user intent, delivering smarter and more accurate results directly from the taskbar.
A huge change for Windows Search
Windows Search has remained largely unchanged for years, often requiring users to remember exact file names, folder locations, or keywords. The rumored “Ask Copilot” integration could finally modernize the experience by using AI to interpret natural requests more like a human assistant.
The feature sounds similar to how AI assistants work on smartphones and cloud services, but deeply integrated into Windows 11 itself. If implemented well, it could significantly reduce the time users spend searching for files or navigating through folders.
Reports suggest Microsoft wants the taskbar search box to become more conversational and intelligent while still remaining fast and accessible for everyday users.
Classic Windows Search will reportedly remain
One important detail from the reports is that Microsoft does not plan to remove the traditional Windows Search experience. Users who prefer the classic search box with standard keyword-based results will reportedly still be able to use it.
This approach could help Microsoft avoid backlash from users who dislike forced AI integrations or prefer the current Windows workflow.
The company has increasingly added Copilot features across Windows 11, Microsoft Edge, Office apps, and Microsoft 365 services. However, keeping the classic search option available may make the transition easier for long-time Windows users.
Expected rollout timeline
The new “Ask Copilot” taskbar experience is reportedly expected to begin rolling out sometime around mid-2026, although Microsoft has not officially announced the feature yet.
As with many Windows features still in development, plans could change before launch. Microsoft may also initially test the feature with Windows Insider users before a wider public rollout.
Microsoft’s growing AI push in Windows 11
The rumored AI search upgrade aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy of integrating Copilot deeply into Windows 11. Over the past year, the company has introduced AI-powered features including:
- Copilot integration in the taskbar
- AI actions inside File Explorer
- AI-powered settings recommendations
- Copilot features in Microsoft Office apps
- Recall and semantic search experiences on Copilot+ PCs
Adding natural language search directly into the taskbar could become one of the most useful AI features yet, especially for users managing large numbers of files and documents.
If the reports are accurate, “Ask Copilot” may represent the next major evolution of Windows Search — turning the taskbar into a true AI assistant rather than just a simple search bar.
