Microsoft has officially launched the new Study and Learn Agent inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, bringing an AI-powered study coach to students and educators worldwide. The new learning-focused agent is now generally available for all K12 and Higher Education students with a Microsoft Education license at no additional cost.
The company also introduced a dedicated professional development course for educators, allowing teachers to learn how to integrate the AI assistant into classrooms while earning an official badge.
What Is the Study and Learn Agent?
The Study and Learn Agent is a new AI-powered educational assistant built directly into Microsoft 365 Copilot. It appears in the Copilot left navigation and works across virtually any subject students are studying.
Unlike traditional AI chatbots that simply provide answers, Microsoft says the new agent is designed around guided learning. The assistant encourages students to think critically by leading with questions and step-by-step coaching instead of completing assignments for them.
According to Microsoft, the Study and Learn Agent can:
- Explain difficult concepts in simple terms
- Support writing without writing essays for students
- Guide learners through math and science problems step-by-step
- Generate flashcards for revision
- Create quizzes and interactive learning activities
- Check understanding through adaptive coaching
- Help students stay engaged in self-paced learning
The company says the AI is intentionally designed so “the learner stays in the driver’s seat,” making it more of a study companion than an answer engine.
AI Learning Coach Built Into Microsoft 365 Copilot
The new Study and Learn Agent is integrated directly into Microsoft 365 Copilot, making it easily accessible for schools already using Microsoft’s education ecosystem.
Students can open the agent from the Copilot sidebar and begin asking questions naturally, whether they are studying:
- Mathematics
- Science
- Literature
- History
- Languages
- Coding
- Research topics
- Exam preparation materials
Microsoft says the tool currently supports English (US), with additional language support rolling out in the coming weeks.
Designed for Responsible AI-Assisted Learning
One of the most notable aspects of the Study and Learn Agent is Microsoft’s focus on guided education rather than shortcut-based AI usage.
The company emphasizes that the assistant is designed to:
- Encourage reasoning
- Promote independent learning
- Build understanding gradually
- Avoid simply generating finished assignments
This approach addresses growing concerns among educators about students relying too heavily on generative AI tools for homework and assessments.
Instead of replacing the learning process, Microsoft positions the agent as a digital tutor that coaches students through problems interactively.
New Professional Development Course for Educators
Alongside the launch, Microsoft also introduced a dedicated training course for educators interested in using the Study and Learn Agent effectively in classrooms.
Teachers who complete the course can earn a professional badge while learning:
- Best practices for AI-assisted education
- Classroom integration strategies
- Responsible AI learning methods
- Student engagement techniques using Copilot
Microsoft says the course is designed to help educators confidently adopt generative AI tools while maintaining academic integrity.
Why This Matters
The launch of the Study and Learn Agent signals Microsoft’s deeper push into AI-powered education tools as competition in the edtech and AI tutoring space rapidly grows.
With companies increasingly introducing AI assistants for schools, Microsoft’s approach stands out by emphasizing guided coaching instead of automated answer generation.
The integration inside Microsoft 365 Copilot also gives schools a centralized AI learning environment already connected to familiar tools like Word, OneNote, Teams, and PowerPoint.
As AI becomes more common in classrooms, tools like the Study and Learn Agent could reshape how students study, revise, and interact with educational content on a daily basis.
Students and educators with eligible accounts can access the new feature directly through Microsoft 365 Copilot.
