Microsoft is expanding the capabilities of Microsoft 365 Copilot on iPad by bringing one of its most useful productivity features to Word for iPad. Users can now collaborate with Copilot directly inside their documents, eliminating the need to switch between apps while writing, editing, or refining content.
The feature, which has already been available on desktop, web, Android, and iPhone, is now making its way to iPad users as part of the Microsoft 365 Insider program.
Copilot becomes your writing partner in Word for iPad
With the latest update, Copilot works as an AI co-author inside Word. Instead of opening a separate chat window, users can simply highlight text or place the cursor where they want new content and ask Copilot to help.
Whether you’re drafting a business proposal, writing meeting notes, preparing reports, or polishing existing content, Copilot can assist without interrupting your workflow. Microsoft says the goal is to keep users focused on writing while AI handles repetitive editing and drafting tasks.
What you can do with Copilot
The new experience allows users to:
- Generate new content from simple prompts
- Rewrite paragraphs for better clarity
- Expand or shorten selected text
- Improve grammar, tone, and readability
- Organize content into a more structured document
- Continue writing directly within the current document
Because Copilot edits the document in place, formatting and document structure remain intact, making the workflow feel much more natural than copying content between apps.
Availability
The feature is currently available to Microsoft 365 Insiders using:
- Word for iPad Version 2.99 (Build 25070219) or later
- An iPad running iPadOS 18 or newer
- A Microsoft 365 Copilot license for work or school accounts
Microsoft notes that the rollout is gradual, so not every Insider will receive the feature immediately.
How to use Copilot in Word for iPad
Once the feature is available:
- Open a Word document on your iPad.
- Tap the Copilot icon.
- Enter a prompt describing what you’d like to create or edit.
- Review Copilot’s suggestions and insert or modify the generated content directly within the document.
The experience mirrors the Copilot workflow already available on desktop and iPhone, making it easier to switch between devices without changing how you work.
Microsoft continues expanding Copilot across Microsoft 365
This launch is another step in Microsoft’s broader effort to integrate Copilot deeply across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. Over recent months, the company has introduced more intelligent editing tools, enhanced AI-powered document creation, smarter suggestions, and improved accessibility features across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft 365 apps.
Bringing in-document AI collaboration to the iPad closes one of the remaining platform gaps and gives tablet users nearly the same Copilot-powered writing experience available on desktop.
As Microsoft continues investing in AI-first productivity, Word on iPad is becoming a much more capable tool for professionals, students, and creators who rely on tablets for work on the go.
