Microsoft has officially launched Xbox Backward Compatibility for PC, marking one of the biggest announcements for Xbox and Windows gaming in years. Starting today in early preview, players can enjoy select original Xbox games natively on Windows PCs, with Microsoft confirming that many more Xbox console titles will arrive over time.

The move is part of Microsoft’s long-term vision of making the entire Xbox game library accessible across devices, bringing decades of gaming history to PC players without requiring an Xbox console.

Xbox Backward Compatibility Comes to PC

The initial release introduces support for four original Xbox classics:

  • BLiNX: The Time Sweeper
  • Conker: Live & Reloaded
  • Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
  • Fuzion Frenzy

These games are available through the new Xbox Backward Compatibility experience on Windows, with Microsoft describing this as the first step in a much larger rollout.

More Than Simple Emulation

Rather than simply running old console software, Microsoft has enhanced these titles specifically for modern PCs.

Players can expect:

  • Up to 4× resolution upscaling
  • Improved anti-aliasing
  • Anisotropic filtering
  • VSync support
  • Fullscreen and windowed display modes
  • Modern controller support
  • Compatibility with Windows gaming handhelds such as the Xbox Ally lineup

Microsoft also confirmed that Achievements will be added to supported original Xbox games in the future, giving classic titles a more modern Xbox experience.

Included with Xbox Game Pass

The launch titles are also included with eligible Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, making it easy for subscribers to jump into these classic games without purchasing them individually. Microsoft says additional supported games will continue arriving as the backward compatibility catalog expands.

A Major Step for Game Preservation

Xbox has long been praised for its console backward compatibility efforts, but bringing that same philosophy to Windows PC is a significant milestone.

Microsoft says the initiative is focused on:

  • Preserving classic Xbox games
  • Making older titles accessible on modern hardware
  • Unifying the Xbox and Windows gaming ecosystems
  • Supporting future Xbox handheld devices and PCs

This aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy of treating Windows as one of the primary Xbox gaming platforms.

What’s Next?

Today’s release is only an early preview, and Microsoft has already confirmed plans to bring many more Xbox console games to PC over time. While no complete roadmap has been announced, this launch signals the beginning of a much larger expansion of Xbox’s backward compatibility program beyond consoles.

For longtime Xbox fans, it means beloved classics are finally making their way to PC with modern enhancements, while new players get the opportunity to experience some of the platform’s most iconic games.

As Microsoft continues expanding the library, Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC could become one of the company’s biggest gaming initiatives in years.
