Microsoft has announced a major update to the Windows Insider Program, rolling out several new preview builds and officially introducing a new build train for Windows 11 version 26H1. The change is designed to give Insider testers clearer separation between the Beta and Experimental development branches while improving flexibility for users testing future Windows releases.
The announcement comes as Microsoft continues refining its revamped Insider Program structure, which earlier replaced traditional Dev and Canary pathways with the newer Beta and Experimental channels.
New 26H1 Build Series Arrives
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of separate build number ranges for Windows 11 version 26H1.
Starting now:
- Experimental (26H1) devices will receive builds in the 28100 series
- Beta (26H1) devices will receive builds in the 28000 series
According to Microsoft, this move allows Windows Insiders testing 26H1 to choose between Beta and Experimental experiences while maintaining distinct development branches.
Users can switch between the two experiences through:
Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program
Microsoft says moving between these channels requires only an in-place upgrade rather than a clean Windows installation.
What Is Windows 11 Version 26H1?
Windows 11 version 26H1 is a specialized release focused primarily on platform-level changes and support for upcoming hardware, including devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Series processors. Unlike Microsoft’s annual feature updates, 26H1 is not intended as a major consumer-facing feature release.
Microsoft continues to recommend that most Windows Insiders remain on the default Windows core version unless they specifically need to test 26H1-related platform updates.
New Builds Released This Week
Microsoft is currently rolling out the following Insider Preview builds:
Beta Channel
Build 26220.8575
Key changes include:
- Ability to extend Windows Update pauses multiple times
- Fix for audio issues affecting some Insider devices
- Reliability improvements for Installed Apps settings
- Fixes for freezes involving Search, Notepad, and other applications
Beta (26H1)
Build 28020.2236
This update delivers a small collection of general improvements and bug fixes aimed at enhancing overall system stability.
Experimental (26H1)
Build 28120.2242
Highlights include:
- General reliability improvements
- Expanded rollout of Administrator Protection
- New option to enable Administrator Protection directly through Windows Security settings
- Restart required after enabling the feature
Experimental Channel
Microsoft did not release a new build for the standard Experimental channel this week.
Why This Change Matters
The new build train marks another step in Microsoft’s broader effort to modernize the Windows Insider Program. Previously, many 26H1 testers were receiving identical builds regardless of whether they selected Beta or Experimental experiences. The new structure finally creates separate development paths, giving Microsoft greater flexibility to test features, platform changes, and stability updates independently.
For Insider enthusiasts, the update also simplifies channel switching and provides clearer visibility into which branch of Windows development they are testing.
Looking Ahead
Microsoft’s latest announcement suggests that Windows 11 version 26H1 development is entering a more mature phase, with dedicated Beta and Experimental branches now fully operational. While 26H1 remains focused on hardware enablement and platform improvements rather than headline consumer features, the new build structure lays the groundwork for more targeted testing throughout 2026.
