Microsoft has released a new Windows 11 Insider Beta (26H1) preview with a collection of improvements aimed at personalization, recovery, accessibility, File Explorer, emojis, and the taskbar.
Released on August 31, 2026, the update is primarily focused on polishing existing Windows 11 experiences rather than introducing a major new feature overhaul. Microsoft says the changes are being gradually rolled out to Insiders.
Better Wallpaper and Personalization Experience
The update brings several improvements to Settings > Personalization > Background.
Microsoft has improved the reliability of the Background page and increased the resolution of wallpaper previews. Users with portrait-oriented monitors should also see a better preview experience when selecting desktop backgrounds.
Windows 11 now supports DIB image files as desktop backgrounds, while desktop slideshow transitions have been made more reliable, particularly on newly created accounts.
The update also improves how Windows handles rapid wallpaper changes and adds better support for slideshow wallpapers across multiple virtual desktops. Previously, some users could find Windows automatically switching back to the Picture option.
Microsoft has also fixed an issue from the previous flight that could cause the desktop wallpaper to turn black after every reboot.
WinRE Can Reuse Saved Wi-Fi Profiles
One of the more useful changes is coming to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
WinRE can now automatically reuse eligible Wi-Fi profiles saved in the main Windows installation, including supported certificate-based networks.
Previously, WinRE could automatically connect to wired unauthenticated Ethernet or Wi-Fi networks that had been separately configured for the recovery environment. Other WPA2 and WPA3 networks generally required users to manually enter their passwords.
With the new networking capability, WinRE can use saved Wi-Fi information when recovery requires an internet connection.
That could be particularly useful during Quick Machine Recovery and cloud rebuild scenarios, allowing affected PCs to get online without users or IT administrators having to configure Wi-Fi credentials separately inside WinRE.
The feature is enabled by default, although administrators can disable it if necessary.
Modern Print Management Temporarily Removed
Microsoft is temporarily pulling the modernized Print Management experience from Windows Insider builds while it continues refining the feature based on Insider feedback.
Importantly, this does not remove the existing Print Management tools. Microsoft says the current tools remain available and unaffected.
The redesigned experience is expected to return in a future Insider build after additional improvements have been made.
File Explorer Home Remembers Your Layout
File Explorer is getting a small but convenient usability improvement.
File Explorer Home now remembers whether sections were expanded or collapsed, meaning users can return to the page without having to rearrange those sections again.
It’s a relatively minor change, but one that should make File Explorer feel more consistent between sessions.
Magnifier Gets a Windows 11 Visual Refresh
Microsoft is also modernizing the Magnifier toolbar.
The toolbar now features updated icons that better match the Windows 11 design language, along with refined spacing and padding for a cleaner appearance.
The functionality itself isn’t changing. Microsoft says Magnifier views, zoom controls, keyboard shortcuts, and Read Aloud continue to work as before.
Emoji 17.0 Arrives in Windows 11
Another noticeable addition is support for Emoji 17.0.
The update introduces new emoji, including a distorted face, fight cloud, and hairy creature. Users can access the emoji panel by pressing Windows + Period (.).
Microsoft has also made subtle design adjustments to some existing emoji, including the saluting face, face with peeking eye, goose, lotus, and kissing cat, to improve consistency across platforms.
Taskbar System Tray Reliability Improved
The Windows 11 taskbar is also getting a small reliability improvement.
Microsoft has improved the reliability of loading the system tray area, potentially reducing situations where system tray icons or related components don’t load correctly.
What This Beta Build Means for Windows 11
This latest Beta channel release is more about polishing Windows 11 than radically changing it.
The improved wallpaper handling, smarter WinRE networking, File Explorer state preservation, refreshed Magnifier toolbar, Emoji 17.0 support, and taskbar reliability improvements collectively make the operating system more consistent.
The WinRE networking change is arguably the most significant addition because it could make recovery situations considerably easier, especially when a PC needs internet access but the user isn’t in a position to manually configure a Wi-Fi connection.
As always with Windows Insider builds, Microsoft warns that features shown in preview builds can change, be removed, or never reach the public version of Windows.
Microsoft’s Flight Hub lists this Beta release alongside the latest 26H1 Insider builds, confirming its August 31 rollout.
