Microsoft is rolling out another round of quality-of-life upgrades for File Explorer in the latest Windows 11 Experimental Preview Build 26300.8376. While this update does not introduce flashy AI features, it focuses on something many users care about more: making File Explorer faster, cleaner, and less frustrating to use every day.

The new build improves the File Explorer address bar, fixes long-standing rename annoyances, upgrades file size readability, and refines keyboard navigation across context menus. These changes are currently being tested with Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel.

File Explorer Address Bar Finally Handles More Complex Paths

One of the most useful improvements in this update is the upgraded address bar behavior inside File Explorer.

Microsoft says the address bar now properly supports paths containing double backslashes and quotation marks. That means entries such as:

  • C:\Users\user
  • "C:\Users\user"

will now work more reliably when pasted into File Explorer.

This should improve compatibility with scripts, developer workflows, enterprise environments, and copied terminal paths that previously caused inconsistencies. Microsoft also fixed the reliability of the address bar suggestion dropdown, which now closes correctly after selecting an item.

File Sizes Are Finally Easier to Read

Windows users have complained for years about File Explorer displaying nearly everything in KB, even for huge files.

Microsoft is now changing that behavior in Details view. File sizes will automatically display in appropriate units such as:

  • KB
  • MB
  • GB

instead of forcing KB-only formatting.

This small change dramatically improves readability when browsing large folders, especially for creators, gamers, and users managing large media libraries.

Rename Experience Gets Important Bug Fixes

The rename experience inside File Explorer is also getting several fixes.

Microsoft addressed an issue where text would repeatedly reselect itself while renaming files in folder views. Another fix resolves a bug where case-only filename changes were not immediately reflected across local and cloud storage folders.

For example, changing:

  • photo.png
    to
  • Photo.png

will now update correctly without delayed refresh behavior.

These fixes may sound minor, but they remove frustrating inconsistencies that power users regularly encounter.

Better Keyboard Navigation in Context Menus

Microsoft also improved keyboard navigation for File Explorer context menu flyouts.

This enhancement should make File Explorer feel more responsive and accessible for keyboard-focused users and accessibility workflows. The company has been gradually improving File Explorer usability across recent Insider builds, including search box consistency, thumbnail clarity, and navigation refinements.

Microsoft Is Quietly Polishing Windows 11 Ahead of Bigger Updates

Recent Windows 11 Insider builds have focused heavily on usability improvements instead of major redesigns.

Over the past few months, Microsoft has:

  • fixed File Explorer flashing issues,
  • improved context menu responsiveness,
  • sharpened thumbnails,
  • modernized the Run dialog,
  • and refined Explorer performance overall.

The latest Experimental build continues that trend by targeting small frustrations that impact daily Windows usage.

Availability

These File Explorer improvements are currently rolling out gradually to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel as part of Windows 11 version 25H2 testing. Microsoft notes that features may expand over time through controlled rollouts.

We Tested the New File Explorer Changes Ourselves

After installing Windows 11 Experimental Preview Build 26300.8376 on our test machine, we were able to confirm several of the new File Explorer improvements firsthand.

The updated file size formatting is immediately noticeable in Details view, where File Explorer now properly displays files using MB and GB instead of forcing everything into KB values. The address bar behavior also appears smoother and more reliable when pasting complex paths.

We also tested the rename fixes Microsoft mentioned in the changelog. The issue where text repeatedly reselected itself during renaming appears to be resolved in our testing, and case-only filename changes now refresh correctly inside folder views.

Keyboard navigation across File Explorer context menu flyouts also feels more consistent compared to previous builds.
