Microsoft is finally making a small but welcome change to the Windows 11 setup process: users can now choose their own User Folder Name instead of being stuck with the name Windows automatically generates.
The option has appeared on the Device Name page during Windows 11 setup, giving users more control over how their account folder is named.
It may sound like a minor change, but it’s something Windows users have wanted for years—especially those who don’t want their C:\Users\ folder to be based on an automatically shortened version of their Microsoft account name.
You Can Now Pick Your Windows 11 User Folder Name
During setup, Windows 11 now provides an option to specify the name that will be used for your user folder.
Previously, Windows would largely determine this name automatically during the setup process. That could result in unexpected folder names, particularly when signing in with a Microsoft account.
With the new option, users get a chance to choose a preferred folder name themselves.
For example, instead of Windows automatically creating something like:
C:\Users\alexj
you can choose a more appropriate name during setup.

One Important Limitation
There’s an important catch: the new option doesn’t apply when creating a local account during Windows 11 setup.
The change is aimed at the standard setup flow involving a Microsoft account. If you use a local account instead, you won’t get this particular customization option.
That distinction is worth remembering if you’re installing Windows 11 using one of the methods that bypasses the Microsoft account requirement.
A Small Windows 11 Change That Fixes an Annoying Problem
