Microsoft is making a useful change to Windows 11 File Explorer that should make it much easier to preview downloaded files without undoing the security protections introduced last year.
A new “Preview anyway” button is being tested for the Preview pane. It will let users view a trusted downloaded file after File Explorer warns that the file could potentially be unsafe.
The change is essentially a compromise between security and convenience: Windows 11 will continue blocking previews by default for files downloaded from the internet, but users will get a simple way to override the warning when they know the file is safe.
Why Windows 11 Blocked File Previews
The Preview pane is one of File Explorer’s most convenient features. It allows users to quickly view PDFs, documents, images and other supported files without opening another application.
However, Microsoft changed this behavior in October 2025 after identifying a security risk involving files downloaded from the internet.
The restriction was introduced to address a vulnerability that could potentially expose NTLM hashes when malicious files containing certain HTML references were previewed. An attacker could potentially use the technique to capture sensitive authentication information.
As a result, Windows began treating internet-downloaded files differently.
Files carrying the Mark of the Web (MotW) identifier can have their previews blocked. This can include files downloaded through web browsers, email attachments, cloud storage and other internet-based sources.
The Preview Pane Still Works for Local Files
The security change did not completely remove File Explorer’s Preview pane.
If you create a file directly on your PC or transfer it through certain local methods, the Preview pane can continue to work normally.
The problem appears when Windows considers a file to have originated from the internet.
When users try to preview one of these files, File Explorer displays a warning explaining that the file could potentially harm the computer.
Previously, however, the warning didn’t provide an easy way to continue.
“Preview Anyway” Makes the Process Much Easier
That’s where the new Preview anyway button comes in.
Once the feature reaches your PC, File Explorer will continue displaying the security warning. But if you recognize the file and trust where it came from, you can simply select Preview anyway to view its contents in the Preview pane.
This is considerably easier than the existing workaround.
Today, users who trust a blocked file can right-click it, open Properties, find the security section and select Unblock. Some advanced users have also relied on PowerShell commands to automate the process.
The new button should eliminate those extra steps for ordinary users.
Microsoft Isn’t Removing the Security Protection
Importantly, this isn’t a complete rollback of the security change.
Windows 11 will still treat internet-originated files as potentially risky. The Preview pane won’t automatically start displaying every downloaded file again.
Instead, the new approach puts the decision in the user’s hands after showing the warning.
That makes the feature a sensible middle ground. Microsoft can keep the protection enabled by default while allowing users to quickly preview files they know are legitimate.
The Feature Was Already Seen in Windows Insider Testing
Microsoft previously documented the Preview anyway feature in Windows Insider release notes in April 2026.
The change was described as a new button that appears in the File Explorer Preview pane for internet-downloaded files after the warning is displayed.
It did not immediately become widely available, but the feature is now expected to begin rolling out more broadly in the coming weeks.
Availability could therefore vary depending on the Windows 11 version and Microsoft’s rollout schedule.
A Small File Explorer Change That Users Will Notice
For many Windows 11 users, this may look like a relatively minor improvement. In practice, it fixes one of the more frustrating consequences of the security changes introduced last year.
The Preview pane exists specifically to save users time. Having to open Properties and manually unblock a file just to see a PDF or document defeats much of that convenience.
With Preview anyway, Windows 11 keeps the security warning while giving users a straightforward escape hatch when they trust the file.
It’s a much better balance between security and usability, and it could make File Explorer feel considerably less restrictive for people who regularly work with downloaded documents.
