Microsoft has just pushed Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1812 to the Canary Channel. While much of the buzz this week surrounds the massive overhaul of the Insider Program itself, this specific build brings some practical, “quality-of-life” refinements that power users will appreciate.
If you’re on the bleeding edge of Windows development, here is everything you need to know about the latest flight.
New Customization for Touchpads
One of the standout additions in Build 28020.1812 is a granular control for touchpad users. Microsoft is introducing a new setting that allows you to choose the size of the right-click zone.
The Options: You can now toggle between Default, Small, Medium, and Large for the right-click area.
The Catch: This setting only appears for touchpads that feature a pressable surface. If you use third-party manufacturer apps to customize your touchpad, a “Custom” entry will now appear in the dropdown to preserve those specific values.
Refined “Drag Tray” Experience
Based on Insider feedback, Microsoft is tweaking the Drag Tray (the peek view that appears when you drag files near the top of the screen).
The peek view is now smaller, which should significantly reduce “accidental invocations”—those annoying moments where the UI pops up when you just wanted to move a window.
It’s also been made easier to dismiss if you change your mind mid-drag.
Enhanced Windows Security & Secure Boot
Security remains a priority in this build. The Windows Security app has been updated to provide better transparency regarding your hardware’s protection.
You can now directly check your Secure Boot certificate status within the app.
Microsoft is also updating Secure Boot certificates on consumer and business PCs to ensure devices remain compatible with the latest security standards.
Feedback Hub Gets a Face-Lift
The Feedback Hub (version 2.2604.101.0) is rolling out to both Dev and Canary Insiders with several community-requested tweaks:
Persistent Window Size: The app will now remember your window size and position across sessions.
Navigation: You can finally use the mouse back button to navigate between pages.
Bug Fixes: A fix has been implemented for users who were seeing less community feedback than usual.
Other Improvements & Fixes
Voice Typing: Improved reliability when configuring the “fluid dictation” option in settings ($Win + H$).
General Stability: A “small set of general improvements” aimed at making the Canary experience feel a bit less like a construction zone.
How to Get the Update
If you are already in the Canary Channel, head to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Look for KB5083824 to jump to Build 28020.1812.
Note: As a reminder, the Canary Channel is the “wild west” of Windows builds. While these features are exciting, they can be unstable. Always ensure you have a fresh backup before updating!
Are you planning to test out the new touchpad settings, or are you more excited about the Secure Boot transparency?
