Microsoft is preparing to enable a Windows 11 security feature on more PCs, and while the change is good news for system security, it could come with a downside for some PC gamers.

The feature in question is Memory Integrity, also known as Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI). Microsoft uses it to protect Windows from malicious drivers and attacks targeting the operating system kernel.

The company plans to begin enabling the protection on eligible Windows 11 devices through upcoming quality updates, starting in October 2026.

For most newer PCs, the performance impact may be small. However, gamers using older hardware could notice lower frame rates in certain games.

What is Windows 11 Memory Integrity?

Memory Integrity is part of Microsoft’s Virtualization-based Security (VBS) technology.

In simple terms, it creates an isolated environment using the Windows hypervisor. Code running at the kernel level has to pass additional security checks before it is allowed to execute.

That makes it considerably harder for malware to exploit vulnerable drivers or manipulate Windows at a low level. Microsoft describes Memory Integrity as an important part of hardening Windows against attacks targeting the kernel.

The security feature isn’t new. Windows 11 has supported and enabled Memory Integrity on compatible systems for years, particularly on clean installations and devices that meet Microsoft’s hardware requirements.

What’s changing is that Microsoft is preparing to expand automatic enablement through Windows quality updates on eligible devices.

Why gamers may care

The problem is that additional virtualization and security checks can introduce some performance overhead.

Microsoft itself notes that Memory Integrity works more efficiently on newer processors. Older CPUs can rely on additional emulation for some of the required hardware capabilities, resulting in a larger performance impact.

That doesn’t mean every Windows 11 game will suddenly lose a significant number of frames.

Older PCs could feel the change more

Should you turn Memory Integrity off for gaming?

For most users, probably not.

Memory Integrity exists for a reason, and disabling it reduces the security protections Windows can provide against certain kernel-level attacks.

If you’re experiencing a measurable gaming performance problem and want to determine whether Memory Integrity is contributing to it, temporarily disabling the feature can be used as a troubleshooting step.

But it’s better to treat that as a test rather than a permanent gaming optimization.

Microsoft’s recommendation is to turn the protection back on after you’re finished gaming if you’ve disabled it to improve performance.

There’s also a driver compatibility angle

Performance isn’t the only potential issue.

Microsoft acknowledges that some applications and hardware drivers can be incompatible with Memory Integrity. In rare cases, compatibility problems can even lead to serious system issues such as a blue screen.

Microsoft specifically lists some gaming anti-cheat solutions among areas where HVCI compatibility has historically been an issue.

That’s why keeping Windows, graphics drivers, game clients and other gaming software updated remains important as Microsoft expands the rollout.

Windows 11 is becoming more security-focused

Microsoft’s decision reflects a broader direction for Windows 11: security features are increasingly becoming part of the default operating system experience rather than optional extras.

For Microsoft, enabling protections such as VBS and Memory Integrity by default helps establish a stronger security baseline across Windows PCs.

For gamers, however, the equation is slightly different.

A security feature that has little impact on a modern gaming PC may have a more noticeable effect on an older machine. That makes Microsoft’s October rollout something worth watching, particularly for players who care about squeezing every last frame out of aging hardware.
