OpenAI is bringing ChatGPT directly into Microsoft Word, giving users a new way to write, rewrite, proofread, and improve documents without having to leave the application.
The new ChatGPT add-in, which began rolling out around September 17, adds the AI assistant to Word through a persistent sidebar. Instead of opening ChatGPT in a separate browser tab and constantly copying text between the two applications, users can now keep the AI assistant alongside the document they are working on.
For people who already spend much of their day in Word, the integration could make AI-assisted writing considerably more convenient.
Procrastination has met its match. ChatGPT is now in Word.
You can add ChatGPT to Microsoft Word to turn rough notes into first drafts, untangle tricky paragraphs, proofread, and get suggested edits—all without leaving your document.
It can even spot formatting issues. Which… pic.twitter.com/cRCgHeTr8V

ChatGPT gets its own sidebar in Word
The biggest change is also the simplest: ChatGPT is now available directly inside Microsoft Word.
Once the add-in is installed and the user signs in, the ChatGPT sidebar can remain open while they work on their document. This means users can ask for help with their writing without interrupting the main editing workflow.
For example, someone working on a report could use ChatGPT to turn a collection of rough notes into a structured draft. A writer could ask it to rewrite an awkward paragraph, while another user could use it to proofread a document before sending it out.
The idea is to make AI assistance feel like part of Word rather than a separate application.
From rough notes to a finished draft
One of the more useful applications is turning unstructured material into something more readable.
Users often start documents with bullet points, incomplete sentences, copied notes, or a collection of ideas that still need to be organized. ChatGPT can help transform that material into a more coherent draft.
The user can then continue editing the result directly in Word, giving them control over the final document.
This approach also makes the feature useful beyond traditional essay writing. Reports, business documents, emails, proposals, meeting notes, presentations and other forms of professional writing can all benefit from having an AI assistant available during the editing process.
Rewriting and proofreading without switching apps
The sidebar can also be useful when a document is already written but needs some polishing.
Users can ask ChatGPT to make a paragraph clearer, improve its flow, adjust the tone, or simplify complicated wording. It can also help identify grammatical issues and other problems that may otherwise be missed during a quick proofread.
That could be particularly useful for people who frequently have to produce professional documents but don’t necessarily want to spend time moving sections of text into a separate AI chatbot.
Instead, the workflow becomes much more straightforward: write in Word, ask ChatGPT for assistance when needed, review the suggestion, and continue editing.
Formatting help is part of the workflow
Writing isn’t the only area where the add-in can help.
Users can also turn to ChatGPT when a document needs formatting improvements. This could include reorganizing content, making sections more consistent, or suggesting ways to present information more clearly.
The important distinction is that the AI assistant sits next to the document rather than requiring users to leave Word.
That small interface change could make a significant difference for people who frequently use AI while working.
Available on all ChatGPT plans
The Word add-in is being made available across ChatGPT plans, including the free plan.
Business and Enterprise customers are also receiving a two-week preview of the advanced GPT-5.6 Sol model through September 30.
For organizations using managed ChatGPT workspaces, the add-in is scheduled to become enabled by default on October 1.
This makes the integration particularly interesting for workplaces where Word remains a central part of the daily workflow.
Getting started is straightforward
Users can install the ChatGPT add-in through the Microsoft Marketplace and sign in with their ChatGPT account.
After installation, ChatGPT appears in Word’s sidebar and can be used alongside the document.
The result is a workflow that looks much more like having an AI writing assistant sitting next to the user rather than opening a separate chatbot whenever help is needed.
Why the sidebar matters
At first glance, putting ChatGPT in Word might seem like a relatively small change. After all, users could already open ChatGPT in a browser and copy and paste text.
The difference is convenience.
Copying text between applications can quickly become annoying when you’re working with long documents or repeatedly asking for changes. Keeping ChatGPT inside Word reduces that friction and makes it easier to use AI assistance throughout the writing process.
It also means users don’t have to constantly switch context between their document and a browser window.
For occasional ChatGPT users, that may not matter much. For people who use AI throughout the day, however, having the assistant permanently available could make the workflow feel substantially more natural.
Human review is still important
As with any AI writing tool, ChatGPT’s suggestions shouldn’t automatically be treated as the final version.
AI-generated text can still contain factual mistakes, misunderstand a request, change the intended meaning, or produce wording that doesn’t sound like the original author.
That makes human review particularly important for professional, academic and other important documents.
The most useful approach is therefore to treat ChatGPT as an assistant rather than an automatic replacement for the person writing the document. Users can generate ideas, restructure paragraphs, improve clarity and catch potential errors, while retaining control over what ultimately goes into the document.
Another step toward AI-powered productivity
The Word integration reflects a broader shift in how AI assistants are being incorporated into everyday software.
Rather than requiring users to open a dedicated AI application, companies are increasingly putting these tools directly into the applications where people already work.
For Microsoft Word users, that means ChatGPT is no longer just something you visit in a browser when you need help. It can now sit alongside the document throughout the writing process.
The feature may ultimately prove most valuable not because it introduces a completely new AI capability, but because it makes capabilities people already use much easier to access.
For anyone who spends hours writing and editing documents in Word, eliminating the constant copy-and-paste routine could be one of the most noticeable benefits.
