Microsoft is giving Copilot in SharePoint another useful upgrade, and this one is all about making information easier to understand and act on.

With the August 2026 update, Copilot can turn SharePoint list data into interactive dashboards and let site owners add one-click AI actions directly to SharePoint pages. Instead of simply asking Copilot questions about your data, you can now use that information to create something much closer to a finished report or workflow.

That may sound like a small change, but it could make SharePoint considerably more useful for teams that rely on lists, reports and internal sites every day.

Copilot Can Turn SharePoint Lists Into Live Dashboards

One of the biggest additions is the ability to generate a SharePoint dashboard directly from a list.

Microsoft says Copilot can create an interactive HTML report that remains connected to the underlying SharePoint list. That means users aren’t simply getting a static snapshot of their data.

Instead, the dashboard can provide a more visual way to explore the information, making it easier to spot trends, understand numbers and share insights with colleagues.

For example, imagine a team maintaining a SharePoint list containing project updates, sales information, customer requests or support tickets.

Rather than manually exporting that information and building a report, a user could ask Copilot to turn the list into a dashboard.

The result can then serve as a more convenient starting point for reviewing the data.

Why This Matters

This is where Microsoft’s Copilot strategy is becoming more interesting.

AI assistants have traditionally been good at answering questions. Microsoft increasingly wants Copilot to help users go one step further and create useful work products from the information already available to them.

The new SharePoint dashboard capability fits directly into that approach.

And because the dashboard stays connected to the underlying list, it can be more useful than a one-time AI-generated summary.

Add Copilot Actions Directly to SharePoint Pages

Microsoft is also introducing Copilot page buttons, allowing users to add one-click AI actions to SharePoint pages.

These buttons can launch contextual prompts, meaning visitors don’t necessarily have to figure out what to ask Copilot themselves.

For organizations building internal SharePoint sites, this could be particularly useful.

A company could create a page containing important information and then add an AI button that helps employees perform a specific task related to that content.

Instead of seeing a Copilot box and wondering what to type, users can simply click an action designed for that particular page.

SharePoint Is Becoming More AI-Driven

The August update follows a broader transformation of SharePoint.

Microsoft has been steadily moving Copilot beyond basic search and summarization. Recent SharePoint updates have added capabilities for creating documents and presentations from SharePoint content, generating interactive reports, discovering reusable skills and managing files using natural-language commands.

The direction is becoming increasingly clear: SharePoint isn’t just becoming a place to store company information. It’s becoming a workspace where AI can help people do something with that information.

That’s an important distinction.

Instead of searching through a library, opening several files and manually building a report, users can increasingly describe the result they want and let Copilot handle more of the preparation.

A More Practical Copilot for Businesses

The new features could be especially useful for organizations that already use SharePoint as a central hub for business data.

Consider a project management site.

A team could maintain its project information in a SharePoint list, generate a dashboard from that data and then add contextual Copilot actions to the project page.

The same basic approach could work for HR portals, sales dashboards, customer service sites, operations pages and internal knowledge hubs.

The benefit isn’t necessarily that Copilot eliminates every manual task. Instead, it can reduce the repetitive work involved in turning existing information into something useful.

Microsoft Is Putting AI Where the Data Already Lives

One of the strongest parts of this update is that users don’t need to move their information somewhere else just to work with AI.

SharePoint already contains the lists, documents and pages many organizations depend on.

Copilot is increasingly being placed directly on top of that existing content.

Microsoft’s broader Copilot updates are following a similar pattern across Microsoft 365, with AI increasingly able to work across files, emails, meetings and other organizational information rather than operating as a standalone chatbot.

For businesses, that could ultimately be more important than flashy AI demonstrations.

The real value comes when AI fits naturally into the tools employees are already using.

What to Expect From Copilot in SharePoint

Microsoft’s August 2026 update is another step toward making SharePoint more interactive and AI-powered.

The two headline additions are:

  • Interactive dashboards: Copilot can generate an HTML dashboard from SharePoint list data while keeping it connected to the underlying list.
  • Copilot page buttons: SharePoint pages can include one-click AI actions that launch contextual prompts.

Together, these features make Copilot feel less like a chatbot sitting alongside SharePoint and more like a built-in productivity layer.

For users, that means less time figuring out how to present information and more time actually working with it.

And if Microsoft continues in this direction, SharePoint could become one of the more interesting places to see how AI moves from simply answering questions to getting work done.

Microsoft’s August Copilot in SharePoint update is available as features roll out, so availability can vary depending on the user’s Microsoft 365 environment and rollout stage.
