Microsoft is quietly testing another under-the-hood change in Edge Canary, this time targeting the browser’s built-in PDF reader.
Over the past few weeks, Microsoft has been experimenting with rendering the PDF reader using its newer WebUI2 architecture. While most of the changes are happening behind the scenes, Canary users are starting to notice a few small visual differences.
PDF Reader Tooltips Get a Cleaner Look
One of the most visible changes is found in the tooltips that appear when hovering over toolbar buttons in the PDF reader.
Previously, these tooltips had a more traditional appearance with a white border around them. In the latest WebUI2-based implementation, Microsoft has removed that border and switched to a more rounded design.
The change may seem minor, but it gives the PDF reader a cleaner and more modern appearance and brings its interface closer to the visual direction Microsoft is taking across Edge.
What’s Changing With WebUI2?
WebUI2 is part of Microsoft’s ongoing effort to modernize parts of Edge’s interface and improve how browser UI components are rendered.
For the PDF reader, much of the transition isn’t immediately obvious because the changes are primarily architectural. However, small details such as tooltip styling can reveal that Microsoft is gradually moving more of the experience to the newer framework.
The rounded tooltips are therefore less about introducing a major new PDF feature and more about modernizing the underlying interface.
A Small Change, But Part of a Bigger Refresh
There isn’t a major new PDF-reading feature attached to this particular change. Instead, it’s another example of Microsoft gradually refining Edge’s user interface through its Canary builds.
As testing continues, we could see additional visual differences and performance improvements appear in the PDF reader before the WebUI2 implementation eventually reaches stable Edge versions.
For now, the updated PDF reader remains part of Microsoft’s ongoing Canary experimentation, so the exact design could still change before a wider rollout.
