Microsoft’s PowerToys may soon make its popular Awake utility significantly more powerful and easier to use. A newly shared prototype showcases a redesigned Awake flyout that introduces faster controls, customizable timers, and an intelligent process-aware mode that automatically keeps your PC awake only while a selected application is running.
The concept, shared by a Microsoft contributor on GitHub, is currently in the proposal stage and the team is actively seeking community feedback before moving ahead with implementation.
A Cleaner and Smarter Awake Experience
PowerToys Awake has become one of the most useful utilities for Windows power users, allowing PCs to stay awake without modifying Windows power settings. However, its current tray menu is fairly basic.
The proposed redesign introduces a much more capable flyout focused on speed and flexibility.
Key improvements include:
- ⚡ One-click access to every Awake mode
- ⏱️ Custom duration timers instead of only predefined intervals
- 🔗 Process-aware Keep Awake, allowing the PC to remain awake only while a specific application or process is running
The last feature is arguably the biggest enhancement. Instead of manually enabling and disabling Awake, users could simply select an application—such as a video renderer, compiler, backup tool, or download manager—and PowerToys would automatically return Windows to its normal power behavior once that process exits.
Why Process-Aware Awake Makes Sense
Many users only need their PC to remain awake temporarily while completing long-running tasks.
Examples include:
- Rendering videos in Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve
- Compiling large software projects
- Downloading massive game updates
- Running backups
- Processing AI or machine learning workloads
Currently, users often forget to disable Awake afterward, leaving their PCs running indefinitely. The proposed process-linked mode solves this by making the feature automatic.
It’s a small quality-of-life improvement that could significantly improve usability for both casual users and professionals.
Community Feedback Will Shape the Final Design
The redesigned flyout is not yet part of an official PowerToys release. At this stage, it exists as a design proposal, and Microsoft is inviting users to provide feedback before development proceeds. Community responses could influence both the interface and feature set before implementation.
Users interested in contributing ideas or following development can participate in the GitHub discussion.
A Good Example of PowerToys’ Rapid Evolution
PowerToys continues to receive frequent usability improvements across its growing collection of Windows productivity tools. Rather than adding entirely new utilities, Microsoft has increasingly focused on refining existing experiences based on community suggestions.
If adopted, the redesigned Awake flyout would make one of PowerToys’ most practical utilities even more convenient for everyday workflows, especially for developers, creators, and power users who regularly leave long-running tasks unattended.
With one-click controls, custom timers, and intelligent process-based automation, this redesign has the potential to become one of the best improvements to PowerToys Awake in recent years.
