Microsoft is preparing for one of its most significant Windows-focused events in more than two years.
The company has announced a major Windows and Surface event for October 7, 2026, in San Francisco, where it will discuss how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC. The event is expected to bring together Microsoft’s Windows and Surface leadership with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, putting Microsoft’s growing partnership with NVIDIA firmly in the spotlight.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Windows and Devices chief Pavan Davuluri, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang are expected to participate in the event.
While Microsoft has not provided a complete list of products it plans to announce, the company’s messaging strongly points toward a combination of Windows 11, Surface hardware, NVIDIA RTX Spark and local AI computing.
Microsoft is putting local AI at the center
The most important part of Microsoft’s announcement is its focus on local AI.
Microsoft says the event will explore how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC. That is a significant shift in emphasis for the Windows ecosystem.
The company has spent the past couple of years building the Copilot+ PC platform around AI capabilities, particularly NPUs and cloud-connected AI services. The October event appears to take that strategy further by highlighting PCs capable of running substantially larger AI models directly on the device.
That is where NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform becomes particularly important.
NVIDIA and Microsoft have been working together to bring RTX Spark-powered Windows PCs to market, with the platform designed for demanding AI, graphics, development and creator workloads.
NVIDIA says RTX Spark can support 120-billion-parameter AI models locally, while Microsoft has positioned the technology as a foundation for a new generation of personal AI computers.
Surface Laptop Ultra could be a major part of the event
Microsoft has already officially introduced the Surface Laptop Ultra, making it one of the most obvious candidates for additional attention during the October event.
The company describes it as a performance-focused Surface laptop designed for creators and other demanding users. It combines an NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 128GB of unified memory and full CUDA support.
The unified-memory architecture is particularly important because the CPU and GPU can share a large pool of memory depending on the workload.
Microsoft says the system can deliver 1 petaflop of AI compute and run AI models with up to 120 billion parameters locally.
That makes the Surface Laptop Ultra very different from a conventional Windows laptop.
Instead of treating AI as a small additional feature, Microsoft is positioning the machine as a workstation capable of handling serious local AI workloads.
Up to 128GB of unified memory
Memory is one of the biggest differentiators of the Surface Laptop Ultra.
The system can be configured with up to 128GB of unified memory, giving AI developers and creators a large shared memory pool for workloads that can otherwise require expensive desktop hardware or cloud resources.
Microsoft says this combination of unified memory and powerful GPU compute can allow users to work with larger models and datasets directly on the device, potentially improving latency and giving users greater control over sensitive workloads.
For AI developers, that could be particularly useful for experimenting with models locally before moving larger workloads to the cloud.
Full CUDA support brings NVIDIA’s ecosystem to Surface
Another important part of the Surface Laptop Ultra is full CUDA support.
CUDA is central to NVIDIA’s software ecosystem and is widely used for AI development, machine learning, scientific computing and GPU-accelerated applications.
Bringing that software ecosystem directly to a Surface laptop gives Microsoft’s Windows platform another route into the rapidly expanding local-AI development market.
Microsoft’s RTX Spark strategy isn’t limited to consumer applications either. The company is also targeting developers who want to build and test AI applications directly on Windows PCs.
Surface RTX Spark Dev Box expands Microsoft’s local AI strategy
Alongside the Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft has introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact desktop specifically designed for AI developers.
Microsoft says the Dev Box uses the same NVIDIA RTX Spark silicon found in the Surface Laptop Ultra and provides 1 petaflop of AI compute with 128GB of unified memory. It can also run models with up to 120 billion parameters locally.
The machine is designed for sustained workloads such as:
- AI model development
- Local inference
- Model fine-tuning
- Agentic AI pipelines
- Long-running development workloads
- CUDA-based applications
Microsoft is also shipping the system with a customized Windows 11 Pro configuration that includes WSL2 with native GPU passthrough, CUDA support, Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot.
This shows that Microsoft’s RTX Spark strategy goes beyond creating another premium laptop. The company is building a broader Windows ecosystem around high-performance local AI.
Windows 11 is being prepared for RTX Spark
The October event could also provide more details about how Windows 11 is being optimized for this new hardware.
RTX Spark is based on an Arm CPU architecture combined with NVIDIA’s Blackwell GPU technology. That creates opportunities for Microsoft to improve Windows scheduling, application compatibility and performance specifically for this type of hardware.
Microsoft has already been discussing Windows development for the next generation of AI-focused devices, while RTX Spark is intended to provide substantially more GPU and unified-memory resources than conventional Copilot+ PCs.
One particularly interesting area is x86 application compatibility on Arm.
Microsoft has continued improving its Prism emulation technology so traditional Windows applications can run effectively on Arm-based hardware. Improvements in this area will be increasingly important as more high-performance Windows PCs adopt Arm CPUs.
RTX Spark could change what a Windows AI PC means
The RTX Spark platform also changes the definition of an AI PC.
Current Copilot+ PCs generally emphasize NPUs for efficient AI features. RTX Spark takes a different approach by combining a powerful Arm CPU, a large Blackwell GPU and a large unified-memory pool.
NVIDIA says RTX Spark is designed for workloads including local large-language models, AI agents, high-resolution video production, 3D workloads and demanding graphics applications.
That means the October event could demonstrate Windows PCs running AI workloads that previously would have been associated with powerful desktop workstations or cloud infrastructure.
Don’t expect Windows 12
Despite the significance of the event, there is currently no indication that Microsoft is preparing to unveil Windows 12 on October 7.
The company’s messaging is instead focused on the future of Windows 11, local AI, Surface hardware, RTX Spark and the broader PC ecosystem.
This is important because Microsoft’s Windows strategy has increasingly centered on evolving Windows 11 through new AI capabilities, hardware optimizations and platform improvements rather than introducing a completely separate Windows generation.
Therefore, users should expect the October event to be about where Windows 11 and Windows PCs are going next, rather than the launch of a new Windows version.
Why Jensen Huang’s appearance is important
The presence of NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang gives the event an additional dimension.
Microsoft and NVIDIA have been working closely on the RTX Spark platform, with both companies positioning it as a foundation for the next generation of Windows PCs built around personal AI.
Having Huang alongside Satya Nadella and Pavan Davuluri suggests that the event will likely spend considerable time discussing the combination of Windows software and NVIDIA hardware.

Microsoft could also showcase software improvements designed to take better advantage of the unusual CPU/GPU/unified-memory architecture of RTX Spark systems.
Microsoft is entering another phase of the AI PC era
Microsoft’s May 2024 Windows event helped establish the Copilot+ PC era, with the company emphasizing AI-capable hardware and Arm-based Windows laptops.
More than two years later, the October 7 event appears to represent another stage in that evolution.
The emphasis is no longer simply on having an NPU inside a laptop.
Instead, Microsoft is looking toward PCs that can run increasingly large AI models locally, combine CPU and GPU resources through unified memory, and provide developers with enough computing power to build AI applications directly on Windows.
The Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark Dev Box provide an early look at that direction.
Whether this approach becomes a mainstream PC category will depend on factors such as pricing, software compatibility, battery life, performance and the availability of optimized applications. But Microsoft’s decision to dedicate a major Windows and Surface event to local AI shows how seriously the company is taking the shift.
