Skype

Microsoft has started rolling out the next generation Skype on Android. With the latest update, version 8.0, Skype has been completely overhauled and feels more colorful than ever before. According to Microsoft, the new Skype app vastly improves the ways you can connect with your favorite people, when chatting is put front and center.

We’ve made group chats more lively, expressive, and—most importantly—personalized, so you can chat the way you want. With the new Skype, you’ll have countless ways to share life’s moments together, every day. Wherever life takes you, Skype allows you to seamlessly create, play, share, and do more with the people you care about most.

The new Skype app also lets you customize the app with your favorite colors. When in a conversation, you can now easily express your reactions by sharing photos, messages, emoticons and stickers in real-time with the other party. The UI has been re-built and has three tabs for you to get familiar with: Highlights, Chats and Capture.

The Highlights tab is somewhat a close match to Snapchat or Instagram stories, where you share your everyday moments with your friends and family. But, unlike Snapchat or Instagram, these memorable moments stay available for seven days.

How to post a Highlight:

  • To post a Highlight, swipe to access your camera, take a photo or video.
  • Post it to your Highlights or send it directly to your contacts or groups.
  • Once you post a Highlight, your friends and family can react to it with emoticons or by jumping into a conversation.

Chats tab helps you get back to the most recent conversations, while as swiping over or tapping on the Capture tab lets you quickly shoot precious moments and share them with friends and family either as 1-1 or via group chats.

It is quite a major update and given the fact that it is in its initial stages, it may or may not work as expected. Microsoft has also planned to roll out the update for iOS over the next few weeks. Windows and Mac users may have to wait a few months before they start to see the update. In a nutshell, it is also going to be pretty exciting.
