OpenAI’s Astra story just got more interesting. A previously circulating internal codename, “mewfour,” appears to have resurfaced in an unexpected place: OpenAI’s public Codex repository.
The timing is what makes the discovery particularly intriguing.
According to the evidence behind the claim, OpenAI removed references to “mewfour” from 52 pull requests on August 7, only about 2 hours and 34 minutes after the company published its Astra cybersecurity update. Six days later, the same name reportedly appeared in the history of openai/codex.
That does not prove what “mewfour” represents. But it creates a surprisingly concrete trail that is worth examining.
First, the proof
The strongest part of this story isn’t another anonymous AI leak. It is the combination of UI evidence and repository history.
The accompanying image reportedly shows the real interface that was being reviewed, while GitHub’s edit history provides the underlying trail. OpenAI’s public Codex repository has a substantial, actively maintained commit history, making historical changes independently inspectable.
The important detail is the name mewfour.
That name had already appeared in recent Astra speculation, with reports describing it as an internal checkpoint or release-candidate codename. One recent report, for example, claimed that an Astra build called “mewfour” had reached release-candidate status. That claim itself remains unverified.
But the new evidence is interesting because it allegedly connects that same unusual identifier to OpenAI’s own public development infrastructure.
The timing is difficult to ignore
On August 7, OpenAI publicly acknowledged that its Astra evaluations could not rule out the model reaching the “Critical” cyber-capability threshold under its Preparedness Framework.
That prompted OpenAI to slow parts of Astra’s development and move testing into more restricted environments while additional safeguards were developed.
Now consider the reported sequence:
- August 7: OpenAI publishes its Astra cybersecurity update.
- ~2 hours 34 minutes later: references to “mewfour” are reportedly scrubbed from 52 PRs.
- Six days later: “mewfour” reportedly appears in OpenAI’s Codex repository history.
- Today: the repository’s public history remains available for anyone to inspect.
The timing alone doesn’t establish causation. It could be coincidence, an internal cleanup, a temporary testing identifier, or something unrelated to Astra.
But it is precisely the sort of sequence that deserves closer examination rather than being dismissed as another social-media rumor.
Why “mewfour” matters
The codename itself has been circulating around Astra for days.
Recent reports have linked “mewfour” to an internal Astra checkpoint and claimed that the model had reached release-candidate status. Those reports were not backed by an official OpenAI announcement, so they should be treated as unconfirmed.
The new repository evidence, if the Git history checks out exactly as described, changes the nature of the discussion.
Instead of asking:
“Did someone on social media invent the name mewfour?”
the more interesting question becomes:
“Why did the same unusual name appear in OpenAI’s own development history?”
That’s a much more testable claim.
GitHub history is the part worth watching
OpenAI’s Codex repository is unusually active. Its public history contains thousands of commits, with changes made by numerous OpenAI contributors across the project.
That history can preserve clues that aren’t obvious from the current version of the code.
A reference can be removed from the latest files while remaining visible through earlier commits, pull-request discussions, or edit history.
That’s why the reported sequence is potentially more significant than simply finding the word “mewfour” in a screenshot.
The current repository is only one snapshot. The history tells the story of how it got there.
Does this confirm Astra is “mewfour”?
No — not yet.
This distinction is important.
There are currently three separate claims:
- Astra exists.
OpenAI has publicly discussed Astra and its cybersecurity evaluation. - “Mewfour” has been associated with Astra by reports and leaks.
This remains unconfirmed by OpenAI. - “Mewfour” reportedly appears in OpenAI’s Codex development history.
If the cited GitHub history and timestamps are authentic, that provides considerably stronger evidence that the identifier was used somewhere inside OpenAI’s development ecosystem.
The third point still doesn’t automatically prove that “mewfour” is Astra.
It could refer to an internal model alias, a test configuration, an evaluation environment, a temporary branch, or something else entirely.
But the August 7 cleanup makes the story stranger
The reported removal of references from 52 PRs shortly after OpenAI’s Astra security announcement is arguably the most interesting piece of the puzzle.
If those references were genuinely removed around 2 hours and 34 minutes after the announcement, the obvious question is what changed internally on August 7 that made those references undesirable?
There are several possibilities.
OpenAI could have been cleaning up leaked internal terminology.
It could have been separating a model checkpoint from the public Astra name.
It could have been preparing a repository for changes associated with the security restrictions.
Or it could simply have been unrelated housekeeping that happened to coincide with the Astra announcement.
Without the actual PRs and commit diffs being independently verified, it would be irresponsible to choose one explanation.
The bigger Astra picture
The timing also lands in the middle of an unusually complicated Astra rollout.
OpenAI’s own security disclosures indicate that the company is taking the model’s cyber capabilities seriously enough to introduce additional restrictions and testing.
That makes the appearance of an internal-looking model identifier in Codex particularly interesting.
Codex is, after all, deeply connected to agentic coding workflows. OpenAI’s public repository shows ongoing work around multi-agent functionality, model metadata, safety controls, execution environments and other infrastructure that could become increasingly important as more capable models are integrated into coding agents.
That doesn’t mean Astra is already powering Codex.
It does mean that Codex is exactly the kind of place where an internal model identifier could plausibly surface during development or testing.
What we can say — and what we can’t
The evidence currently supports a cautious conclusion:
“Mewfour” is more than just a random name circulating on social media if the reported GitHub history is genuine.
There appears to be a chain worth investigating:
Astra reports → “mewfour” codename → August 7 security announcement → reported cleanup of 52 PR references → later Codex repository appearance.
That’s a compelling sequence.
But it isn’t yet an official confirmation that mewfour = Astra.
Until OpenAI confirms the identifier—or the repository history provides an unmistakable connection—the safest description is an apparent internal codename associated with Astra speculation and now reportedly visible in OpenAI’s public Codex history.
For now, the GitHub trail may be more interesting than the leaks themselves.
And if the historical edits really do show what the evidence claims, OpenAI may have accidentally left behind a much better breadcrumb trail than it intended.
Bottom line
The “mewfour” story has moved from pure rumor toward something more tangible because there are now specific timestamps, repository history and alleged UI evidence to examine.
That still doesn’t tell us when Astra will launch—or even definitively prove that “mewfour” is Astra.
But it does give the AI community something far more useful than another anonymous launch-date prediction:
a trail that can potentially be checked.
