The AI model race is moving into another busy phase, with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and several leading Chinese AI labs reportedly preparing their next-generation models.
Some of the names circulating are based on industry reports and leaks rather than official announcements, so launch timing should be treated cautiously. Still, the current roadmap points to a potentially packed period for frontier AI, with new models expected to focus heavily on reasoning, coding, agentic workflows, token efficiency and long-running tasks.
Anthropic has already demonstrated the direction of travel with Claude Fable 5.1, while OpenAI recently launched its GPT-5.6 family. Google, meanwhile, continues expanding its Gemini 3.x lineup.
Here are the major AI models currently being discussed.
Anthropic: Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.2
Anthropic could be preparing another major update to its Claude lineup.
The models currently being discussed include Claude Opus 5.5 and a possible Claude Fable 5.2. At this stage, neither should be treated as officially announced products.
Anthropic’s recent Fable 5.1 release provides some clues about where the company is heading. Fable 5.1 is designed for demanding coding, knowledge-work and long-running tasks, while Anthropic also highlighted substantial improvements in token efficiency and pricing. The company says Fable 5.1 can reduce the cost of typical workloads by around 25%, with highly agentic workloads potentially seeing reductions of up to approximately 45%.
If the next generation follows that direction, efficiency could become just as important as raw benchmark performance.
There is also speculation that Anthropic could adjust its model naming or extend the Fable line further as competition intensifies.
Recent reporting says Anthropic is considering a new model following the arrival of OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, although the company has not confirmed the model’s identity or release date.
OpenAI: GPT-6 Sol and GPT Terra
OpenAI is another company at the center of the upcoming-model speculation.
The names currently circulating include GPT-6 Sol and GPT Terra, with reports suggesting that both could arrive very soon.
However, these names should be treated carefully because OpenAI’s current official lineup already uses Sol, Terra and Luna as capability tiers within GPT-5.6. OpenAI describes GPT-5.6 Sol as its flagship, Terra as a lower-cost model and Luna as its fastest and most affordable tier.
That means future naming could change significantly from what leaks currently suggest.
OpenAI has also reportedly been preparing another model internally, sometimes referred to as Astra 6.1. There is no official release information for such a model at the time of writing.
For now, the confirmed direction from OpenAI is clear: the company is concentrating on stronger reasoning, coding, cybersecurity, tool use and agentic workflows. GPT-5.6 Sol was specifically positioned around complex long-horizon work and improved efficiency on several tasks.
Google: Gemini 4 Pro and Gemini 4
Google could be preparing the next major generation of its Gemini family.
The names being discussed include Gemini 4 Pro and potentially additional Gemini 4 variants such as a Flash model.
Google, however, is still actively expanding the Gemini 3 generation. Its official model documentation currently lists models including Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3.8 Audio, Gemini 3.7 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro, showing that the company is continuing to iterate rapidly rather than waiting for a single large annual upgrade.
A Gemini 4 generation would therefore represent another significant jump in Google’s model roadmap, particularly if the company combines its latest multimodal, reasoning and agent capabilities into a new flagship.
Moonshot AI: Kimi K3.1
Moonshot AI is another Chinese AI company to watch closely.
The company launched Kimi K3 earlier this year, and the model has already attracted significant usage. Recent reporting says Kimi K3 has become an important part of Moonshot’s commercial strategy, with the company targeting substantial annualized revenue growth.
A possible Kimi K3.1 would likely represent an incremental upgrade rather than an entirely new generation, although specifications and launch timing remain unconfirmed.
Moonshot’s recent momentum makes any Kimi update particularly interesting as competition among Chinese AI labs continues to intensify.
Z.ai: GLM 5.5 or GLM 5.4?
Z.ai’s next model may be one of the more confusing names in the current rumor cycle.
The company has already released GLM-5.3 and GLM-5.3-Flash, making claims about an imminent GLM-5.5 release difficult to verify. Current public evidence does not establish an official GLM-5.5 announcement.
In fact, some tracking of Z.ai’s release cadence suggests that the next major model could instead be called GLM-5.4, with GLM-5.5 remaining a community or rumor-driven name.
GLM-5.3 itself already provides a strong baseline, with a 1-million-token context window and a focus on coding and agentic workloads.
So while GLM 5.5 is worth watching, its name and release schedule should not yet be treated as confirmed.
DeepSeek V5
DeepSeek is another major name expected to return to the spotlight.
The model being discussed is DeepSeek V5, although reports currently point toward a later release rather than an immediate September launch.
The company is still expanding the V4 family. DeepSeek’s official documentation shows V4-Pro and V4-Flash releases, with V4-Flash receiving substantial agentic and coding improvements.
That makes an eventual V5 particularly interesting because DeepSeek has increasingly focused on agentic coding, long-context workloads and cost-efficient inference.
Based on the current rumor cycle, October is being discussed as a possible window, but there is no official DeepSeek V5 launch date.
Qwen 4 Max, Qwen 4 Flash and Qwen 4 Plus
Alibaba’s Qwen family could also receive a major refresh.
Rumors point toward several potential Qwen 4 variants, including:
- Qwen 4 Max
- Qwen 4 Flash
- Qwen 4 Plus
Alibaba has been moving aggressively across both models and infrastructure. Its latest announcements include plans for a future model with 5 trillion to 10 trillion parameters, alongside a new AI chip designed to support increasingly large model clusters.
That makes the Qwen roadmap particularly important to watch.
However, the specific Qwen 4 names listed above should currently be considered rumored rather than officially confirmed. Alibaba’s public model releases continue to evolve rapidly, with recent Qwen 3.8 updates and new multimodal models appearing throughout September.
The next AI model battle could be about efficiency, not just benchmarks
One interesting trend across these rumored releases is the increasing importance of efficiency.
The next generation of AI models is not simply expected to produce higher benchmark scores. Companies are increasingly competing on:
- How many tokens a model needs to complete a task
- How efficiently it uses reasoning
- Long-running autonomous agents
- Coding and software engineering
- Multimodal understanding
- Tool and computer use
- Context-window size
- Inference cost
- Speed
- Reliability over long tasks
Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 is a good example of this shift. The company explicitly highlighted lower token-related costs and efficiency improvements alongside capability gains.
OpenAI is also emphasizing this direction, with GPT-5.6 Sol delivering stronger results on complex tasks while using fewer tokens in some evaluations.
Upcoming AI models to watch

What comes next for the AI race?
The coming weeks could become particularly interesting if several of these rumored models move from speculation to actual releases.
The biggest question may not be which company produces the highest benchmark score. Instead, the focus is increasingly shifting toward which models can reliably perform complicated work for hours, use tools, write and debug software, interact with computers and complete multi-step tasks without constant human intervention.
For now, however, many of the model names circulating online remain unconfirmed. The safest approach is to treat GPT-6 Sol, GPT Terra, Opus 5.5, Fable 5.2, Gemini 4, Kimi K3.1, GLM 5.5, DeepSeek V5 and Qwen 4 variants as upcoming or rumored models until their respective companies publish official announcements.
With OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and China’s leading AI labs all moving rapidly, the next major model launches could make the second half of 2026 one of the most active periods yet for generative AI.
