Anthropic has announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on its flagship Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 AI models, ending weeks of uncertainty and allowing the company to resume worldwide distribution without requiring export licenses.

The move marks a significant policy reversal and removes one of the biggest obstacles facing Anthropic’s most advanced AI models, enabling customers and developers around the world—including foreign nationals—to regain access starting Wednesday.

Export Restrictions Lifted After Security Review

According to Anthropic, the Department of Commerce informed the company on June 30 that export licenses would no longer be required to distribute Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 globally.

The restrictions had been imposed on June 12, when the U.S. government ordered Anthropic to suspend access to the models over national security concerns. At the time, officials reportedly worried that sophisticated jailbreaking techniques could expose cybersecurity vulnerabilities or enable misuse of the company’s frontier AI models.

Following discussions with U.S. authorities, Anthropic agreed to strengthen its security commitments, including additional safeguards against misuse and improved reporting of malicious activity. Those commitments ultimately satisfied regulators, paving the way for the restrictions to be removed.

Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Return Worldwide

With the export controls lifted, Anthropic says it will immediately begin restoring access to:

  • Claude Fable 5
  • Claude Mythos 5

The decision means international developers, enterprise customers, researchers, and Anthropic employees who were previously blocked can once again use the company’s most advanced AI systems without special licensing requirements.

Claude Sonnet 5 Becomes the Default AI Model

The announcement coincides with the rollout of Claude Sonnet 5, which is now becoming the default model for both Free and Pro users.

Anthropic positions Sonnet 5 as a balanced model that delivers:

  • Excellent coding capabilities
  • Strong long-context understanding
  • Faster everyday performance
  • Improved accessibility for mainstream users

While Fable 5 and Mythos 5 remain Anthropic’s frontier models aimed at advanced workloads, Sonnet 5 is expected to become the company’s most widely used AI model.

Why This Matters

The decision highlights the growing importance of AI governance and national security in the development of frontier AI systems.

Rather than representing a permanent ban, the June restrictions became a short-lived regulatory pause that resulted in additional safety commitments from Anthropic. The company can now continue expanding access while operating under enhanced security expectations from U.S. regulators. Officials have also indicated that the government could revisit the decision if Anthropic fails to uphold its commitments.

For developers and businesses relying on Anthropic’s most capable models, the removal of export controls restores access to cutting-edge AI capabilities while reinforcing the increasing role governments are playing in overseeing advanced AI technologies.
