Reinstalling an operating system used to be a chore reserved for USB thumb drives, ISO downloads, and tedious driver hunting. Microsoft shifted that paradigm with Cloud Rebuild—a Windows 11 recovery tool that pulls fresh OS files and exact hardware drivers directly from Windows Update to restore a PC to a clean slate, even when the local system refuses to boot.

Now, Microsoft is making Cloud Rebuild noticeably more versatile. In the latest Windows Insider builds released across the Experimental channel, Microsoft introduced two high-demand capabilities: built-in drive sanitization and remote execution for IT administrators.
What Is Cloud Rebuild in Windows 11?
Unlike standard local reset options that rely on existing recovery partitions (which can become corrupted alongside the OS), Cloud Rebuild communicates directly with Windows servers over Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
It downloads the matching Windows 11 build, edition, and language package while automatically fetching necessary system drivers. The end result is a pristine, fully operational Windows installation without requiring installation media or custom recovery images. Furthermore, supporting improvements like smarter WinRE Wi-Fi profile reuse make it seamless for machines to get online inside the recovery environment without manual credential juggling.
What’s New in the Latest Insider Preview?
According to the official Windows Insider Blog announcement, the September 2026 updates bring two major updates to the Cloud Rebuild workflow:

1. Drive Sanitization Before Reinstall
Previously, re-installing Windows over the cloud wiped user files from normal file indices, but raw data could technically still be recovered using forensic tools.
With the new update, users can elect to sanitize the device’s storage drives during the rebuild process. This overwrites disk sectors to permanently remove leftover personal data, sensitive files, and cached credentials. It’s an ideal feature if you plan to:
Sell, trade in, or donate an old laptop.
Reassign a company PC to a new employee.
Ensure malware or stubborn system modifications are entirely obliterated.
2. Remote Cloud Rebuild via Recovery CSP
For IT departments managing distributed workforces, physically holding a device to trigger a clean reinstall is impractical.
Microsoft has updated the Recovery Configuration Service Provider (CSP) so enterprise administrators can configure and trigger Cloud Rebuild remotely over the cloud. Using Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions like Microsoft Intune, sysadmins can issue a remote rebuild command to restore an uncooperative or compromised PC back to a known-good baseline without requiring an on-site visit.

Mouse Indicator Animation: A sleeker visual animation when highlighting mouse position under Accessibility settings, with a new option to keep the indicator active on screen until you hit the
Esckey.Low-Glare Magnifier Theme Toggle: Standard color inversion can distort photos, videos, and graphical charts. A new contrast theme toggle in the Magnifier tool lowers glare while preserving true visual media colors.
Availability and Rollout
These features are currently rolling out to testers enrolled in the Experimental Channel (covering Builds 26340.9502, 28120.3032, and 29671.1000). Because these builds are used for early feature testing, Microsoft will evaluate user feedback before pushing Cloud Rebuild sanitization and remote CSP capabilities to Beta and general production releases later this year.
