Microsoft has officially confirmed that one of the most requested Windows 11 features is finally on the way: the ability to move the taskbar to the top of the screen. The confirmation came from Microsoft’s Jen Gentleman (JenMsft) on X, ending years of speculation and user frustration around the missing customization option.
Ever since the launch of Windows 11 in 2021, users have criticized Microsoft for removing classic taskbar customization features that were available in Windows 10 and earlier versions of Windows. One of the biggest complaints was the inability to reposition the taskbar to the top, left, or right side of the display.
Now, Microsoft says the feature is “coming soon.”
Microsoft finally listens to Windows 11 users
According to recent statements from Microsoft and reports from multiple Windows-focused publications, taskbar repositioning is part of the company’s broader effort to improve Windows 11 usability and customization.
Microsoft reportedly plans to restore:
- Taskbar at the top of the screen
- Left and right taskbar positioning
- More taskbar customization options
- Smaller taskbar layouts
The company acknowledged that taskbar customization has been one of the most requested Windows 11 features since launch.
Why this matters for Windows 11 users
For power users, multitaskers, and ultrawide monitor owners, taskbar positioning is more than just a cosmetic feature. Many users prefer the taskbar at the top because it:
- Frees vertical screen space
- Improves workflow efficiency
- Matches macOS-style layouts
- Works better on widescreen monitors
- Feels more natural for productivity apps
Windows 11 removed this flexibility when Microsoft rebuilt the taskbar from scratch, leading many users to rely on third-party apps and registry tweaks.
The feature may arrive first for Windows Insiders
Reports suggest the new taskbar positioning options will first appear in preview builds for Windows Insider users before rolling out publicly later this year.
Microsoft has not yet shared an exact release date, but recent Windows Insider developments strongly indicate that taskbar customization is now a high-priority project inside the company.
Part of Microsoft’s bigger Windows 11 overhaul
The movable taskbar is arriving alongside several other major Windows 11 improvements, including:
- Faster File Explorer performance
- Reduced Copilot clutter
- Better Widgets customization
- Improved Windows Update controls
- Performance optimizations
Microsoft internally refers to many of these efforts as part of its “Windows K2” quality initiative focused on fixing long-standing Windows 11 complaints.
Final thoughts
The return of the movable taskbar could become one of the most popular Windows 11 updates yet. It restores a classic Windows feature that users have wanted back since day one and signals that Microsoft is finally taking community feedback more seriously.
While the company has not announced a firm timeline yet, the official confirmation means Windows 11 users likely won’t have to wait much longer to place the taskbar exactly where they want it.
