Picking up your phone every time it buzzes is one of the quickest ways to lose your train of thought while working. Microsoft has been slowly fixing that problem through its Phone Link integration, and the latest batch of Windows 11 news brings a welcome quality-of-life upgrade right to your desktop.

With the new update rolling out to the phone companion panel in Start, you can now preview full notification details and message content simply by hovering your mouse over recent items—no extra clicks or phone pickups required.

What’s new in the Start menu Phone Companion?

Until now, the Phone Link sidebar embedded next to the Windows Start menu gave you a quick look at battery status, connectivity, recent photos, and basic alerts. But actually reading an alert usually meant clicking into it or grabbing your mobile device.

The latest update changes that with instant hover previews inside the Recent section:

  • Instant Hover Cards: Moving your mouse over a recent text message, missed call, or app alert expands a preview card directly inside the Start menu layout.

  • Zero-Click Context: Read incoming texts, email subject lines, or notification updates without opening the full Phone Link app or switching away from your current workspace.

  • Fewer Distractions: Quickly judge whether an alert needs immediate attention or if it can wait until you wrap up what you are working on.

Why this tiny change is a big deal for daily workflow

It sounds like a minor visual change, but it addresses a constant workplace hurdle: context switching.

Even a quick glance at your smartphone screen can break your focus for several minutes. Surfacing full notification context inside a menu you already open throughout the day helps you stay aware of mobile activity without getting pulled away from your PC.
