Apple may be preparing to bring advertising to one of the most useful parts of its iPhone AI experience.
Code discovered in Apple’s software reportedly points to the possibility of sponsored results appearing inside Visual Intelligence, potentially allowing search providers and other services to insert paid product placements alongside normal visual search results.
The feature is not currently active, and Apple has not announced plans to introduce advertising into Visual Intelligence. But the presence of related code suggests the company is at least preparing the underlying framework for such a system.
And if Apple does eventually activate it, Visual Intelligence could become another place where the company generates advertising revenue.
Visual Intelligence could become a new home for sponsored results

Visual Intelligence already lets iPhone users point their camera at an object and learn more about it.
For example, you can use your iPhone to identify a pair of shoes, search for similar products or find information about an item in front of you. Depending on the search, results can come from services including Google Image Search, Amazon and Etsy.
The experience is particularly useful for shopping because you can discover a product without knowing its name or manually typing a description into a search engine.
The reported code suggests Apple could eventually allow some of these results to be marked as sponsored placements.
That could turn Visual Intelligence into something much closer to a visual shopping search engine.
Imagine pointing your iPhone at a pair of shoes
Consider a simple example.
You see a pair of shoes you like while you’re out shopping. You point your iPhone at them and activate Visual Intelligence.
The system identifies the shoes and searches for visually similar products.
Today, the experience can show you matching or related products from different sources.
With sponsored results enabled, however, some of those products could potentially appear more prominently because an advertiser or search provider has paid for the placement.
You could therefore see something like:
Similar products
- Product A — regular result
- Product B — sponsored
- Product C — regular result
- Product D — sponsored
That would be a significant change to how Visual Intelligence works.
Instead of simply helping you find information about something you see, the feature could also become a commercial discovery platform.
Apple has not announced that ads are coming
This distinction is important.
The reported advertising-related code does not mean Apple has confirmed that Visual Intelligence will contain advertisements.
There is currently no public announcement from Apple saying that sponsored results are coming to the feature.
It is also possible that the functionality could remain unused or change before Apple ever releases it.
Still, the existence of code designed to support sponsored results is interesting because it suggests that Apple is at least considering the possibility.
And given the direction of the search and AI industry, it would not be particularly surprising.
AI search is becoming an advertising opportunity
Search advertising has historically been one of the biggest businesses on the internet. As AI changes how people discover information and products, companies are naturally looking for ways to bring advertising into these new interfaces.
Google, for example, has already been exploring advertising within its AI-powered search experiences.
Visual Intelligence provides Apple with an interesting opportunity because the user’s intent can be extremely clear.
If someone points their camera at a pair of headphones, shoes, furniture or another consumer product, there is a good chance they are interested in learning more about it or buying something similar.
That makes visual search particularly attractive for shopping-related advertising.
Search providers could play a major role
One of the more interesting aspects of the reported implementation is the suggestion that search providers themselves could supply sponsored results.
That could mean Apple does not necessarily need to build an entirely separate advertising marketplace for Visual Intelligence.
Instead, participating search or shopping providers could potentially return both organic and sponsored results when Visual Intelligence performs a search.
That would make the system easier to integrate into Apple’s existing visual search experience.
It could also create another potential revenue opportunity for Apple through partnerships with search providers.
Apple could eventually monetize Visual Intelligence
This is where the development becomes particularly interesting.
Apple has increasingly expanded its services and advertising businesses, while Visual Intelligence is becoming a more important part of the iPhone experience.
The company could potentially monetize the feature without placing traditional banner advertisements on the screen.
Instead, advertising could appear naturally alongside product discovery.
That would be much closer to how sponsored shopping results already work across search engines and online marketplaces.
The difference is that Visual Intelligence would be using the iPhone camera as the starting point for commercial discovery.
The bigger question is whether users will accept it
There is an obvious downside.
Visual Intelligence is presented as a useful AI-powered tool for understanding the world around you. If sponsored products start appearing within its results, users may question whether recommendations are based on relevance or advertising.
That makes transparency especially important.
If Apple eventually enables sponsored results, users would reasonably expect paid placements to be clearly identified and separated from ordinary results.
Otherwise, a feature designed to answer “What is this?” could start feeling like “What can I sell you?”
Apple may be preparing for the future
For now, there is no evidence that Apple is about to switch on Visual Intelligence advertising.
But the reported code is still worth watching.
The company has already built Visual Intelligence into the iPhone’s broader AI experience, and the feature naturally lends itself to product discovery. Adding sponsored results would provide a straightforward way to turn that discovery process into a potential advertising business.
I think the bigger takeaway is not that ads are definitely coming to Visual Intelligence tomorrow. It is that Apple appears to be preparing for the possibility.
Once the infrastructure for sponsored results exists, activating it later would be considerably easier.
And if Apple’s goal is to expand its advertising business, Visual Intelligence could eventually become one of the most natural places to introduce shopping-related ads on the iPhone.
For now, however, the feature remains inactive and Apple has not confirmed when — or even whether — these reported advertising capabilities will reach users.
