Microsoft is rolling out a series of new math-related enhancements to Microsoft 365 Beta Channel users, improving the way equations and mathematical content are created, shared, and consumed across its productivity apps.
The latest update focuses on three key areas:
- Improved LaTeX support
- MathML Core compatibility
- Accessible PDF exports
These additions aim to streamline workflows for students, educators, researchers, engineers, and anyone who regularly works with mathematical expressions.
Improved LaTeX Support Across Microsoft 365
One of the biggest highlights is expanded LaTeX support. Microsoft says users can now bring LaTeX equations into Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote more easily than before. This allows users to move mathematical content between different platforms while maintaining formatting and accuracy.
LaTeX remains the preferred standard for writing scientific and mathematical documents, and deeper integration within Microsoft 365 should help reduce friction when importing, editing, and presenting equations.
MathML Core Compatibility Arrives
Microsoft is also introducing MathML Core compatibility, enabling mathematical expressions to be copied and shared using modern web standards.
MathML is an important accessibility-focused markup language for mathematical notation and is widely used across educational websites, digital learning platforms, and assistive technologies. Microsoft 365 applications already support importing and exporting MathML, and the new MathML Core support further improves interoperability with web-based content and modern browsers.
Accessible PDF Exports Get Better
Accessibility receives a major boost with improved PDF exports that preserve mathematical content in a way that can be understood by assistive technologies such as screen readers.
For students and professionals who rely on accessibility tools, mathematical expressions in exported PDFs can often become difficult to interpret. Microsoft’s latest improvements help ensure equations remain accessible after documents are converted to PDF, making educational and professional content more inclusive.
Why These Changes Matter
Mathematical content has traditionally been one of the most challenging types of information to handle across different software platforms. By improving LaTeX workflows, adopting modern MathML standards, and enhancing accessibility in PDF exports, Microsoft is addressing key pain points faced by educators, researchers, students, and technical professionals.
The update also aligns with Microsoft’s broader accessibility efforts, ensuring that mathematical information remains usable and understandable regardless of how it is shared or consumed.
Availability
These new math enhancements are currently available to Microsoft 365 Beta Channel users. As Microsoft gathers feedback and refines the experience, the features are expected to roll out more broadly to Microsoft 365 customers in future updates.
