Microsoft Introduces New Target Framework for Insiders on Slow Ring

Windows 10

As reported earlier, Microsoft has started the roll-out of new Windows 10 Cumulative Update Build 15063.447 (KB4022716) to Insiders in the Slow Ring. This also means if you are on the Creators Update (non-insider), you should also be able to see and download the update via Windows Update.

The upcoming major feature update for Windows 10 namely the “Fall Creators Update” is arriving sometime around September and Microsoft is already prepping up for its release as the date nears. Until now, there has been no new build pushed to Insiders on the Slow Ring as Microsoft had already separated it from the main development branch and turned it around on the Feature2 release branch. Now, this has started to make sense as Dona Sarkar in his blog has officially announced a new “Target Framework” that will be employed for anyone on the slow ring, going forward.

As per Microsoft, Insiders on the Slow Ring will be seeing the upcoming “Fall Creators Update” builds a bit late and not immediately as and when Dona pushes the button.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog.

With the forth coming release of a new Windows 10 Fall Creators Update build to the Slow ring, we are testing a new update targeting framework and will be delivering the build in staggered phases. This will simulate the rollout process we use when we release major Windows 10 feature updates to retail customers.

When we release a new Windows 10 Fall Creators Update build to Insiders in the Slow ring, they can wait to be targeted to install the new build, or instead of waiting Insiders can manually check for updates via Windows Update to get the new build. We know this is different from our usual “everyone at once” model to the WIP rings, however, this testing will provide invaluable insights to ensure this new targeting framework is functioning as expected.

One thing that is sure is that you can expect a Redstone 3 build on slow ring pretty soon. Do let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
