Microsoft Refreshes Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch With Snapdragon X2 Plus

Microsoft has refreshed its compact Surface lineup with two new lightweight Windows PCs: the Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd Edition) and Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd Edition). Both devices now feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, bringing faster graphics, improved local AI performance and better power efficiency while keeping the portable designs largely intact.

Announced at Snapdragon Summit 2026, the new Surface models are designed for people who want a Windows PC that can easily travel between home, office, school and other locations. Microsoft says the new generation delivers up to 17% faster Office productivity, more than 60% faster graphics, up to 95% faster on-device AI inferencing, and up to 18% more efficient battery performance, depending on the workload and configuration.

Snapdragon X2 Plus brings a bigger performance boost

The biggest change is underneath the familiar Surface designs.

Microsoft has worked with Qualcomm to tune Snapdragon X2 for thin and lightweight PCs, with an emphasis on sustained performance, power efficiency, thermals and on-device AI. The company says the new Snapdragon X2 Plus-powered models can handle supported AI workloads locally, reducing reliance on cloud processing for certain experiences.

Microsoft’s performance figures are based on its own testing, so real-world results will vary depending on applications, settings and configurations.

Surface Pro 12-inch gets brighter display and 5G option

The Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd Edition) remains a fanless 2-in-1 that can switch between tablet and laptop use with the optional Surface Pro Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen.

One noticeable upgrade is its 500-nit PixelSense touchscreen, which Microsoft says is 25% brighter than the previous generation. The device also gets a new Black finish.

Microsoft claims the new Surface Pro can deliver an additional hour of active web browsing compared with the previous generation under its testing conditions.

Another major addition is an optional 5G configuration. Microsoft says cellular connectivity was one of the most requested additions for this form factor, giving users a way to stay connected without depending on public Wi-Fi.

The Surface Pro 12-inch starts at $1,149.99 and is scheduled to become available on October 13 in select markets.

Microsoft Ink Canvas adds an AI-powered creative angle

Microsoft is also introducing Microsoft Ink Canvas with the new Surface Pro.

The pen-first experience is designed for sketching, annotating, generating images and summarizing text directly on the canvas. The idea is to let users start with rough handwritten or visual ideas before turning them into more structured work.

Ink Canvas will come preinstalled on the new Surface Pro 12-inch and is also scheduled to become available through the Microsoft Store for other supported Surface and Windows devices on October 13.

Surface Laptop 13-inch focuses on portability

The Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd Edition) follows a more traditional laptop design while receiving the same Snapdragon X2 Plus upgrade.

Microsoft describes it as a thin, light and fanless Windows laptop with a full-size backlit keyboard, precision touchpad, aluminum body and a 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen.

The display now reaches 500 nits, which Microsoft says represents a 25% brightness improvement. The laptop is also available in a new Black color.

Battery life is another major selling point. Microsoft lists up to 22.5 hours of battery life, although actual runtime will depend heavily on workload and configuration.

The Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at $1,199 and is also expected to launch on October 13 in select markets.

A new Surface Mouse joins the lineup

Microsoft also announced a redesigned Surface Mouse alongside the two PCs.

Its headline feature is integrated haptic feedback, which provides physical feedback for certain interactions. The mouse also has an ambidextrous design, a customizable action button that can be configured for Copilot and other shortcuts, and Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity.

The Surface Mouse starts at $79.99 and will be available in Black and Platinum from October 13 in select markets.

Surface gets a stronger local AI focus

AI is clearly a major part of Microsoft’s pitch for the new hardware.

The company says Snapdragon X2 Plus enables up to 95% faster local AI inferencing compared with the previous Surface Pro 12-inch configuration in Microsoft’s testing. This could make supported Copilot+ and other AI features more responsive while allowing certain processing tasks to happen directly on the PC.

Microsoft is also emphasizing the ability to use a combination of local and cloud processing, depending on the experience and workload.

That approach could be particularly useful for mobile users who want AI capabilities without sending every task to the cloud.

Built for business users too

Both PCs will also be available through Surface for Business starting October 13.

The Surface Pro 12-inch will offer the optional 5G configuration for business customers, while Microsoft is highlighting enterprise security and management features including Secured-core PC protections, Microsoft Pluton with TPM 2.0 and Surface UEFI.

Microsoft is positioning the two devices as portable business PCs that combine Windows, local AI capabilities and enterprise management in lightweight hardware.

Microsoft keeps the focus on lightweight Windows PCs

The new Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch aren’t radical redesigns. Instead, Microsoft is keeping the compact Surface formula and concentrating on what’s happening inside the machines.

The Snapdragon X2 Plus upgrade, brighter displays, improved graphics, faster local AI and the addition of 5G to the Surface Pro make this generation more capable without sacrificing the portability that defines these smaller Surface devices.

With both models arriving October 13, the new generation also gives Microsoft another pair of Snapdragon-powered Windows PCs aimed at users who value mobility without giving up the flexibility of a full Windows experience.
