A new report throws more light on the Surface Excalibur rumor that we posted yesterday. It seems that Microsoft is toying with custom AMD and ARM chips for variants of its 2019 version of Surface Laptop (Surface Laptop 3) and Pro devices (Surface Pro 7) that can be launched in Fall.

As per the report by “Petri” the 12nm custom, AMD SOC has codenamed Picasso and will power a variant of Surface Laptop. While earlier rumored claimed Excalibur to be the codename of a new Surface device, as per this report it is the codename of the custom ARM SOC that Microsoft is developing in close collaboration with Qualcomm for a new Surface Pro variant.

The report claims that Microsoft’s relationship with Intel is not as strong as before and that is the reason behind Microsoft trying to use AMD/ARM chips in its Surface lineup. But Microsoft may not drop Intel chips fully from the Surface lineup and may offer variants of Surface Pro 7 based on the ARM chips along with Intel ones.

It now seems that Microsoft is going to have a big Surface event this fall that may see many new Surface devices some with new AMD/ARM processor under the hood.
