Microsoft released a new Cumulative Update on the Patch Tuesday for Windows 7 and 8.1, along with Windows 10. The update also hit the Windows server running the aforementioned versions.

Users with With Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 are receiving KB4486563 which you can download manually from here. Below is the list of changes.

  • Addresses an issue that may prevent applications that use a Microsoft Jet database with the Microsoft Access 97 file format from opening. This issue occurs if the database has column names greater than 32 characters. The database fails to open with the error, “Unrecognized Database Format”.
  • Adds top-level domain support to HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) Preload for Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11.
  • Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Graphics, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Wireless Networking, Windows Server, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

But things are not all rosy. Microsoft also made it clear that the new update does not come clean and has one known issue but thankfully there is also a workaround for that. You can find the issue and its workaround below.

SymptomWorkaround
After installing this update, virtual machines (VM) may fail to restore successfully if the VM has been saved and restored once before. The error message is, “Failed to restore the virtual machine state: Cannot restore this virtual machine because the saved state data cannot be read. Delete the saved state data and then try to start the virtual machine. (0xC0370027).”This affects AMD Bulldozer Family 15h, AMD Jaguar Family 16h, and AMD Puma Family 16h (second generation) microarchitectures. After installing this update, shut down the virtual machines before restarting the host.Microsoft is working on a resolution and estimates a solution will be available by mid-February 2019.

On the flip side of the Coin, Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 are receiving KB4487000. Click here to manually download it. Meanwhile, you can check out the fixes and improvements below.
