Windows 10

Microsoft has confirmed the end of service for Windows 10 version 1511 (Build 10586) for Current Branch (CB) and Current Branch for Business (CBB) on October 10, 2017.

In simpler terms, Windows 10 version 1511 will no longer receive security and quality updates after October 10, 2017. Since releasing version 1511 in November 2015, Microsoft released several feature updates that deliver the newest features and more comprehensive security.

Windows 10 was designed as a service, whereby feature updates are required a couple times a year. For most consumers, both quality and feature updates are delivered automatically according to their Windows Update settings.

Windows 10 version 1511 end of service impacts the following editions of Windows 10:

  • Windows 10 Home
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Windows 10 Education
  • Windows 10 Enterprise

If you continue to use version 1511, your computer will still work, but since you won’t continue to receive new security updates or other quality updates, it could become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.

To check what version of Windows 10 you are running:

  1. Hit start and type winver and then press Enter.
  2. This opens the About Windows dialog box, where you’ll see the version of Windows 10 that’s running on your device.

To tackle the issue and stay protected, you should consider upgrading updating devices to the latest version of Windows 10 by visiting the Windows Security page and selecting Verify you’re updated to manually update your device.
