Microsoft has quietly rolled out two practical storage upgrades that fix long-standing frustrations in Windows 11—and they’re especially useful if you work with external drives or large files.
From removing the old FAT32 size cap to improving system responsiveness, these changes are already live for Insider users.
The 32GB FAT32 Limit Is Finally Gone
For years, Windows restricted FAT32 formatting to just 32GB—even though the file system itself supports much larger sizes.
Now, that limitation is history.
You can create FAT32 volumes up to 2TB directly using Command Prompt. This is a big deal for users who:
- Use large USB drives
- Format SD cards for cameras or gaming consoles
- Need compatibility across multiple devices
FAT32 remains one of the most widely supported formats, and removing this restriction makes it far more practical again.
Faster and Smoother Storage Settings
Microsoft has also improved the Storage page in Settings inside Windows 11.
If you’ve ever connected multiple drives or large storage volumes, you might have noticed lag or slow loading times. That’s now fixed.
What’s improved:
- Faster loading of storage details
- Smoother navigation between drives
- Better performance with large-capacity disks
This may sound minor, but it significantly improves day-to-day usability.
Available Now for Insider Users
These upgrades are currently rolling out to users in:
- Dev Channel
- Beta Channel
via the Windows Insider Program
A wider public release is expected in upcoming Windows updates.
Why This Update Matters
This isn’t just a technical tweak—it solves real problems:
- No more workarounds to format large FAT32 drives
- Better performance when handling multiple storage devices
- Improved experience for creators, gamers, and professionals
It’s a small update with a surprisingly big impact.
