Microsoft is reportedly preparing a major upgrade for Windows 11 that could make smartphones feel like a natural extension of the PC. According to new reports, the company is working on several Phone Link integrations that will be built directly into the Windows 11 experience, making it easier to access your phone without launching a separate app.

The rumored changes include a dedicated smartphone flyout on the taskbar, a new Messages app for SMS syncing, and improvements to the Phone Link Companion in the Start menu.

Windows 11 could get a dedicated smartphone flyout

One of the biggest changes reportedly in development is a smartphone flyout integrated into the Windows 11 taskbar.

Instead of opening the Phone Link app, users could quickly view their connected phone, notifications, battery status, recent activity, and other controls directly from the taskbar. This would make interacting with a smartphone much faster and more consistent with the rest of the Windows 11 interface.

Native Messages app may sync SMS conversations

Microsoft is also said to be developing a Messages app for Windows 11 that synchronizes SMS conversations from a connected smartphone.

Rather than relying solely on Phone Link, users could manage text messages through a more native Windows experience, making communication feel more integrated into the operating system.

If implemented, it would simplify sending and receiving SMS messages while working on a PC.

Phone Link Companion in Start is getting smarter

The Phone Link Companion integrated into the Start menu is also expected to receive meaningful upgrades.

According to the report, Microsoft is testing:

  • A scrollable list of recent phone activity
  • More detailed previews when hovering over recent items
  • Faster access to recent photos, calls, and notifications
  • A more informative and interactive Start menu experience

These improvements would reduce the need to open the full Phone Link app for routine tasks.

Microsoft wants your phone to feel like part of Windows

The broader goal appears to be making smartphones a native part of the Windows 11 experience rather than an accessory connected through a standalone application.

By integrating Phone Link more deeply into the Windows shell, Microsoft hopes to deliver an experience similar to how Apple tightly connects the iPhone with macOS.

The company has steadily expanded Phone Link over the past few years with support for notifications, calls, messaging, photos, clipboard syncing, and app streaming. These new features would take that integration even further.

When will these features arrive?

Microsoft has not officially announced these changes, and there is no confirmed release timeline.

However, if development continues as reported, these features could first appear in upcoming Windows Insider Preview builds before rolling out to the stable version of Windows 11.

For users who regularly switch between their phone and PC, deeper Phone Link integration could become one of the most useful Windows 11 upgrades in recent years.
