Anniversary Update

Microsoft has blatantly started blocking Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 users as per the reports that are coming in from multiple inputs. If you are carrying around a Windows Phone device which is running on Windows Phone 8.1 OS, and was eligible for the upgrade to Windows 10 during the initial launch, you may not be able to do it right now.

Both the Upgrade Advisor app path as well as getting the update via Windows Insider app has been blocked, preventing the upgrade and throw an error or doesn’t work as expected. The Redmond giant has not released any official statement regarding the silent kill, and may be from what it looks like, never will.

In case you are not aware, Microsoft recently dropped support for older Lumia devices to get the official Windows 10 Mobile Creators Update, and left their hardcore fans to swallow the bitter truth, with a smiling face.

On another note, if you already have Windows 10 Mobile installed on an eligible device, and plan to downgrade in the future, you may face issues getting the Windows 10 upgrade, later. Better is to deal with what you already have, and move on.

It is quite apparent that Microsoft is shutting the doors for Windows Phone and doesn’t even bother to let the fans know what to expect in the future. No one would have believed that Nokia-Microsoft partnership would end on this note and may be, Microsoft has plans to introduce a new device category, but I can bet it will all be aimed at Businesses, and there would be no place for something called Phone.
