Xbox is giving Insiders another substantial set of console improvements, with the latest preview update focused on personalization, achievements, captures, search, profiles, and cloud gaming.
The new features are being tested with Xbox Insiders before a wider rollout. Microsoft says the goal is to give players more control over how they use their consoles while making everyday tasks such as finding games, managing achievements and jumping into cloud gaming more convenient.
Add Chat Audio to Game Captures
One of the more useful additions is the ability to include chat audio in game captures.
Xbox Insiders can choose to record party chat alongside gameplay. Each participant controls whether their own voice can be captured, meaning someone’s voice won’t automatically appear in a recording without their permission.
The feature also supports game chat when players aren’t in a party, giving players more flexibility when capturing multiplayer moments, funny conversations or memorable matches.
Achievements Are Getting Easier to Manage
Achievement hunters are also getting several improvements.
Xbox has been testing additional ways to sort achievement history, allowing players to organize games by factors such as name, completion percentage, Gamerscore earned and the number of achievements unlocked. Sorting can also be done in ascending or descending order.
The latest update adds local search as well, making it easier to find specific games and achievements without scrolling through large lists. Search is available in areas including My games & apps, official club achievement lists and profile achievement history.
For players with years of Xbox history, these changes should make achievement tracking considerably easier.
More Control Over Local Saves
Xbox is also giving Insiders more control over locally stored game saves.
The new management options are designed to help players identify local saves they no longer need and manage storage more easily. Xbox has also been experimenting with additional cloud-save controls, including the ability to restore previously synced versions of saves in supported games.
That could be particularly useful when a newer save becomes corrupted or players simply want to return to an earlier point in a game.
A Cleaner Xbox Home Screen
The Xbox Home experience is getting more customizable too.
Insiders can remove individual items from the Recent Games & Apps section using the Menu button. This includes the Play History tile, giving players more control over what appears at the top of their Home screen.
Microsoft is also testing an immersive background mode that allows dynamic or custom backgrounds to take center stage on the Home screen instead of being obscured by the usual interface elements.
Choose Your Xbox Startup Animation
Another fun personalization option lets players choose which Xbox startup animation appears when they turn on their console.
The choices span different Xbox generations, allowing players to bring back the look of an earlier console generation or stick with a newer startup experience.
The option is available under Settings > System > Startup, where users can also choose whether startup animation sound plays.
Show Off More Profile Badges
Xbox is expanding profile customization with more control over badges.
Insiders can feature up to five badges in their profile card showcase and hide individual badges from their public profile. This follows an earlier update that added more detailed information about badges, including their artwork and information about when and how they were unlocked.
That gives players another way to highlight milestones and achievements that are meaningful to them.
New Search Options Make Finding Games Faster
Searching through a large Xbox library should also become less frustrating.
The new local search feature can be used to quickly locate games and achievements within supported sections of the Xbox interface. Microsoft says it works alongside existing filters and sorting tools, so players can combine the new search functionality with the organization options already available.
Downloads Can Continue While Cloud Gaming
Xbox is also improving the experience for players who switch between local downloads and cloud gaming.
Insiders can now continue downloads in the background while streaming a game through Xbox Cloud Gaming, when network conditions allow it. This means players don’t necessarily have to sit and wait for a download or update to finish before getting into a game.
The setting can be found under Settings > Cloud gaming > Streaming preferences, and Xbox Series X|S players are expected to see the biggest benefits.
This builds on Microsoft’s earlier cloud gaming integration, which allowed players to stream supported games while a local game was installing or updating.
More Features Are Being Tested
Xbox isn’t stopping with the features available to everyone in the current Insider rollout.
Microsoft is also testing additional experiences with selected users, including Daily Gaming Streaks, more achievements and friends information on Home, and the upcoming Mythic Achievement system.
These experiments may not all reach every Xbox console in their current form. As with other Xbox Insider features, Microsoft can change, expand or remove functionality based on testing and player feedback.
Xbox Keeps Expanding the Console Experience
The latest Xbox Insider update shows that Microsoft’s console improvements aren’t limited to major dashboard redesigns or new hardware features.
Many of the changes are smaller quality-of-life additions: better achievement organization, more useful search, cleaner Home customization, flexible profile badges, additional capture controls and fewer interruptions when using cloud gaming.
For Xbox Insiders, these features provide an early look at where the console experience is heading. For everyone else, they offer a preview of the kinds of dashboard and gaming improvements that could eventually become available more broadly.
Microsoft has continued rolling Insider features out in stages, with some features starting in Alpha or Alpha Skip-Ahead before reaching additional Insider rings and, eventually, the wider Xbox player base.
