Windows Phone is close to overtaking Apple’s iOS on the Belgian market, according to Ervan Pouliquen, head of marketing and operations at Microsoft Belgium. Speaking to Le Soir’s tech blog, he said Windows Phone now has 12 percent of the Belgian smartphone market, versus 19 percent for Apple. Belgium ranks in the top ten countries where Windows devices are selling strongest. This was attributed to the popularity of Nokia devices and good brand image of Microsoft in Belgium. According to figures from Kantar Worldpanel, Microsoft’s strongest smartphone market is Italy, with a 17 percent share of sales.

It will be interesting to see how Microsoft can boost the market share of Windows Phone when it is now in driving seat. While Windows Phone is on rise in strong markets like Vietnam and Western Europe, the overall volume is on decline quarter on quarter.
