Microsoft is continuing its gradual modernization of Windows 11, and one of the latest improvements appears in the enhanced Windows Search experience announced today. While the update is relatively small, it removes another piece of legacy Windows UI and brings the power options closer to the operating system’s modern design language.
The Shut Down and Restart actions launched from the improved Windows Search no longer display the decades-old power dialog. Instead, they now open a modernized Shut Down Windows dialog that better matches the Windows 11 interface.
Windows Search Now Opens a Modern Power Dialog
With the latest improvements to Windows Search, users can quickly search for Shut Down or Restart and receive a cleaner, more modern power selection window.
The updated dialog allows users to choose power actions such as:
- Shut down
- Restart
- Sleep
- Sign out (where applicable)
The refreshed interface aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing effort to replace legacy Windows components with Fluent Design-inspired experiences across Windows 11.
For users who frequently rely on Windows Search for system actions, the experience now feels more consistent with the rest of the operating system.
The Classic Alt + F4 Shutdown Window Remains
Interestingly, the long-standing Alt + F4 shortcut still opens the familiar legacy Shut Down Windows dialog when used from the desktop.
Although fully functional, this dialog retains a design that dates back many Windows generations and stands out against Windows 11’s modern visual style.
Many Windows enthusiasts have pointed out the inconsistency between the newly updated Search experience and the classic Alt + F4 power menu. Now that Microsoft has introduced a refreshed shutdown interface through Windows Search, attention naturally shifts to whether the company will eventually modernize the desktop shortcut as well.
Another Step in Microsoft’s Windows 11 UI Cleanup
Over the past few years, Microsoft has been steadily replacing older Windows interfaces with modern alternatives. Recent updates have refreshed various areas of the operating system, including Settings, File Explorer, context menus, and system dialogs.
The new Windows Search shutdown experience continues that effort by reducing reliance on legacy UI elements.
While the change may seem minor, it reflects Microsoft’s broader goal of creating a more visually consistent Windows 11 experience.
Will Alt + F4 Receive the Same Treatment?
At the moment, Microsoft has not announced any plans to redesign the classic Alt + F4 shutdown dialog. However, with a modern version now available through Windows Search, many users hope the desktop shortcut will eventually receive the same visual refresh.
Until then, Windows 11 will continue to feature two different shutdown dialogs depending on how users initiate the power menu—a reminder that Microsoft’s modernization journey is still ongoing.
Key Highlights
- Windows Search now opens a modern Shut Down Windows dialog for power actions.
- Users can select Shutdown, Restart, Sleep, and other power options from the refreshed interface.
